Mac Pro DVD burner busted

The Sony D150 in my Mac Pro has quit. There is no Apple Service provider in my town, and it will be cheaper for me to just replace the drive rather than drive 200 miles twice to take it in.

So, it says it is an ATAPI interface. Can't I just buy any DVD burner with same from Fry's or NewEgg. Anybody have similar experience? thanks.

I have never had any burners in my macs quit working but i have replaced older versions with new (all pioneer) without any problems. You are right burners are so cheap these days it would be easier for you to replace it than have it serviced. should be an easy install in the Mac Pro

I had one go out in my Mac Pro 13 months after I got it - replaced it with a Samsung Lightscribe and it works fantastic. The only thing is that the tray on most aftermarket burners is gonna be too big to fit cleanly through the door opening, so I had to literally shave a couple mm's off to get it to slide through clean. Other than that, it's working great.

thanks for the input - think I'll stop by Fry's.

did you have to remove the faceplate? it looks like the door might interfere.

do you know if dual-layer drives will work ok on the MP?

Remove the face plate.

Easy install, but you might want to call Apple is under warranty and it should ship a replacement

Silverwolf, you rock!

I called Apple DIY and they are mailing me a new drive. My retailer didn't even know about this.

Thanks!

What service! The new drive arrived today, less than 24 hours after I made the call, and it is installed and working. WOW, I'm impressed.
