Does getting iMac i7 to edit HDV (future for full HD) is the way or getting the best Mac Pro 2008 version is a better way to go?

Oh yeah... At the same price range too!!

P.s the Mac Pro is equipped with the old Apple 23 inch HD screen too

Not certain what full HD means, but if it is uncompressed HD, you'll need a capture card, and iMac doesn't support one.

The i7 Imac will edit HDV a little faster, because the processor/memory/architecture is a little more speedy.

The 2008 mac pro will render (apple compressor tasks, after effects, etc) faster, but won't be quite as speedy during editing.

I had the same dilemma as you last year: i7 iMac vs 2008 mac pro (used). I ended up going with the 2008 Mac Pro since I wanted expansion slots and CUDA support in Adobe apps. But it's a pretty sweet deal either way.

So, upgrading and future usage will definitely suggesting Mac Pro right? hmmmm....

David, when you said DOES not support, it means will never support it or can be upgraded with some external capture card? I am still not fully aware of Apple's mode of PC operation yet...well, that's one of the reason for shooting out this thread...

Thanks anyway for the heads up for both of you!!

You cannot update the iMac's video card. Moreover, an capture card is entirely independent of the video card. It is a second PCI board.

Expansion capabilities on the i7 is almost nil, I don't think they even have the ability to add eSata drives, which is crucial IMHO. Nor I don't think they support USB 3.0 yet as an option (could be wrong). I wouldn't waste my money on one. Find a used MPro. Much greater options.

With the Thunderbolt introduction, I guess my options now must include Macbook Pro too huh? I guess I will wait for another 2-3 months before make the final jump!

iMac might even get the THunderbolt too and bang it goes....

If you need a computer now, you buy one now..... There will always be something better and faster coming..... People who think like this will never buy anything as there is something faster always coming. Now to reply to 8string USb3 is not something used for editing, just like usb2 this Master Slave connection simply does not work. Also you can add an eSata connection to the top of the line iMac. Honestly the top of the line iMac with quad core i7 processors at 2.93ghz is a Beast of a machine that can handle most if not everything thrown at it.
