FS7: Mac OSX Mojave - now does quick preview of XAVC MXF files

Just discovered this today, by accident. I haven't seen it documented anywhere, but it looks like Apple snuck in the ability to quick-preview FS7 MXF files (click on file and then hit space bar.)

Very useful for quickly going through files, without fully opening them - haven't been able to do it before with these files.

Ben.

They probably didn't mention it because you've been able to do this for years Ben:-)

Oh dear. I thought I was being useful. Weird, because I checked on a spare Mac with Yosemite and it doesn’t do preview.

Same with my laptop - maybe I’ve got them set up wrong. Doh!

Wow maybe it IS worth installing catalyst browse. good tip nonetheless, thanks!

Doesn't seem to work on my El Capitan. But there was a somewhat mysterious issue on Macs re being able to run the EX/F3 BAVP video files in final cut 7 directly without having to convert to MOV's. Might have also been whether they could open them with quicktime directly also. Some could do it and in some Macs there was a software issue that I couldn't figure out. My couldn't but i know people who could running the same OS. Wonder if this is related.

Hi Lenny,

Do you have the Apple 'Pro Video Formats' installed on your El Capitan? Link:

info about the pro formats and MXF: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT204322

It may be that Mojave installs them automatically if you haven't done it yourself.

Ben

This is awesome info. I did not know you could do this. After clicking on your link, I also found a way to install the "Pro Video Formats" without even having Final Cut installed on my computer (Premiere Pro guy). This is super useful as I can now view all of my FS7II files without ever having to open Catalyst Browse or anything else. That's going to be incredibly handy!

As a side note, running High Sierra on 5K iMac has allowed me to be able to view H.265 files shot from GoPros or my Phantom 4 Pro just like any other file, but High Sierra on my MacBook will not. Apparently my MacBook Pro isn't on the compatibility list with High Sierra to be able to do this. With the link you put here that I installed on my MacBook, that is no longer the case. My Phantom 4 Pro files played just fine in the finder. Couldn't believe that. Makes viewing back footage in the field a much easier endeavor now.

Nice one, Ben.

That sorted it on our other 5K iMac - it didn't have any Apple ProApps on there. A quick install of Compressor did the trick.

I'm not sure why it wasn't working properly on my editing 5K iMac - but the Mojave install seems to have unblocked whatever was stopping it.

Thanks for rescuing this potentially useless thread!

Cheers,

t'other Ben.

You def need Catalyst to preview browse. I don't have it on Sierra and can't preview the files... but I just generally double click since I have set VLC player as the default player.
