Mac OS X 10.8 PRIVATE folder problem- Where are the mts files?!?

Mac users- I recently upgraded from 10.6 to 10.8, and now all my mts clips in the PRIVATE folder appear in Finder as one PRIVATE clip ("AVCHD Content" is the Kind).
No individual clips, just a "Q" Quicktime icon with "PRIVATE" next to it, but no individual clips. And VLC is grayed out, won't work.

I tried re-importing into CS6 Premiere, and the individual clips show up, but in Finder, it's just this one PRIVATE clip.
Offloaded an SD card today, and it shows as one PRIVATE clip, too.

Click on the Q icon and I get thumbnails of only clip 0000 and 0001, even if there's actually 50 clips there.

So now no there's way to manage/delete individual clips.

What happened??? Please help this clueless one... :undecided

You have to control-click or right click on the Private Folder (sometimes even the AVCHD folder inside it) and go to "Show Package Contents". You then have to do this same step for the AVCHD folder, the BDMV folder, and then all your clips will be in the STREAM folder.

Good luck, hope this helped.

wow little bobby! i recently ran into this same problem trying to import on a client new iMac. for the life of me i couldnt figure out was was going on.

cant thank you enough!!!

The other thing the re-packaging of the PRIVATE folder does is allow anyone to view the AVCHD clips in Quicktime. Not that anybody here would need it. I just wish you could turn it off in preferences.

I don't have an AF100, but I do have a Mac where I like to see all the files and folders. To do that you'll need to go into terminal and type this:
defaults write com.apple.Finder AppleShowAllFiles YES
Hit return, and voila! You see all the files and folders that Apple didn't trust you to see before. I wouldn't be surprised if this showed you the proper structure inside your folders now.
To turn it off, just do it again but with FALSE instead of YES

This does not work with the 10.8.x OS.

If you change the name of the PRIVATE folder, it becomes a regular folder. Same with AVCHD, BDMV folders.

If you change the name of the folders, you will be crippling the AVCHD structure and may make the footage unusable.

I make copies of the PRIVATE AVCHD folders and they import into FCPX. However, if I want to browse through individual clips using VLC, or MOVIST, then I just want the STREAM folder with clips.

This isn't true for an NLE, changing the name from private to the project name when archiving does nothing to the structure inside the folder however, if put back on an SD card I don't think it will be playable in camera anymore

you should not drag and drop just the *.mts files in your NLE - use the media browser for premiere, locate the folder, which will stitch the clips together correctly if one clip exceeded the file size of 4GB. Premiere shows the Footage correctly when double clicking the PRIVATE folder in media browser.

If all you want is having access to the *.mts files to open them in VLC and you are a friend of keyboard shortcuts in OSX then assign a shortcut to quickly show package contents. Go to Keyboard --> keyboard shortcuts --> Application Shortcuts --> klick the + and type in the action you want to trigger by simply typing "Show Package Contents" (without the "s) and choose the shortcut you want. I chose ALT + downarrow, similar to the finders command + downarrow (to open folders)
