Mac or PC???

Hey everyone. I am wondering whether to get a G4 Powerbook or the new toshiba windows XP based laptop. I just want to edit films and cannot decide which one to buy. I have heard a Mac is better for editing, but a PC has more software and is cheaper. Also I want to be able to put my footage in letterbox in post, and I want a lot of cool transitions and effects. So what should I get a Mac or PC?

Any help would be greatly appreciated,

Kris ;D

Re: Mac or PC???

you might start a war with this kinda post.. but it all depends what you use right now.. if your a pc guy go pc if your mac stay mac. PC you get programs like Vegas and Premeier that you cant get for apple, and apple you got FCP... whatever os you are used to stick with.

As for cool transistions... dont even dare. Its a bad bad idea.

Re: Mac or PC???

Ahhhh...

The age old question.

Republican or Democrat (REP)
Beer or Wine (BEER)
Film School or NO Film School (NO)
Cinema or Books (CINEMA)
Blonde or Brunette (BRUNETTES)
Mac or PC

I'm a PC guy myself. I'm way too old (well, not that old) to learn how to use a Mac.

A Laptop for editing?

Re: Mac or PC???

Well I use both, and they both have there advantages and diss..
I network them together and pass the required files back and forth depending on which tool is on what machine for the chosen task.

I like my PC, but i love my Mac...and my mom ;D

Re: Mac or PC???

What editing software are you going to be using because the computer is not going to give you transitions and the ability to letterbox! I have a MAC G5 with Final Cut Pro and so far I love it and I showed my work to some Avid editors at my job and they were very impressed with the quality of my DVX100 and then they were equally impressed with the editing job I did on this short Demo that I burned on DVD.

The bottom line is personal preference. Do your research, try to go to stores that might have a system on display for you to play around with. I have a PC and a MAC. The PC is my internet, business, and whatever else computer and the MAC is strictly editing for now until I put cable internet on it!

Re: Mac or PC???

I've always been a Mac diehard... I have a few G4's and a new G5. They're rocksolid & very creative oriented. The new OSX is unix based, so it keeps the stability that high-end users like (unix, irix, etc). But, it's still very VERY easy to use. Many people think Macs can't do everything PC's can... which is really untrue. I do everything on macs... internet, games, work, design, edit, even Microsoft Word & Excel.

On the flipside, I also have PC's, and don't have any (too much) beef with using them. Taylor's point is well made: Use the tools best for the job, be it Mac or PC or an old school Amiga. ;)

Macs are very expensive. I like to think of them as the Ferrari of desktops. You get what you pay for. It's an integrated system with everything designed to work together. (As opposed to many PC setups where each part is from a different manufacturer, all hoping they'll work together nicely). I'm rambling now, but make your choice on what you feel will fit you best.

If you haven't used a Mac, go use one. That way you can form your opinion correctly, not just based on our opinions.

Re: Mac or PC???

Thanks guys. I am use to a mac for editing . All my filmmaker friends use macs, except for one who uses vegas. I find PC editing more complex and confusiong, not as together as when I edit on a mac. I feel safe when I use a mac. My only objection is that a mac costs almost twice as much as a PC. I guess the mac is the way to go for me. I am going to get a G4 Powerbook 17". My friend has the same one, but hers exports footage out of sync sometimes. ??? I need a laptop because I am always on the move and need something portable and reliable to use. I really appreciate everyones help. It feels nice to know if you have a problem regarding filmmaking, your buddies here at dvxuser.com are there for you. Thanks again fellas.

Have a great day,

Kris :)

Re: Mac or PC???

In case this is not too late:

1. Try the editing apps you consider using. These may be iMovie, FCP (Mac); Premiere, AfterFX, Vegas, Pinnacle etc. on PC.

2. Keep in mind that right now FCP is very widely used so if you learn that, you may get more jobs.

3. See what your friends use, talk to them.

4. Make your mind and don't look back.

I personally am using Vegas because I already had a PC setup. If I had had to choose from scratch, I might have had gone for FCP/Mac.

Howeve, I love Vegas as it is - simple, powerful, flexible and uncluttered app naturally providing a streamlined workflow.

Re: Mac or PC???

..it really all comes down to what softeware you want to run.. blah blah blah about the hardware thats running it . it doesnt matter. both the mac and the pc are going to give you the same end result. but.. for the price of a nice mac you could build a pc that would make you breakfast. so comparitively dollar for dollar a pc will always give you far more computing power. the stability of that pc is determined by the type of hardware you put in it , and the o.s. and software you are running. im really not about to hear how much better a mac is than a pc, or a pc than a mac. again it all comes down to what software you want to run.

"I find PC editing more complex and confusiong" ..really this has nothing to do with the hardware being a pc .. its just what software your running. its not as if a pcs keyboard, and mouse are operated completely different than a macs. if you ran the same nle on a mac..would it be any less confusing.?

bottom line .. just get somthing that gets the job done. if it makes you feel better to have a little apple on the side ,more power to you.. or if your comforted by the little intel logo, well thats swell too. but its the choice of nle platforms that will really make or break your editing proficiency. you need to find the nle that you think will best suit your individual thinking and editing style, and allow you to work at your peak, rather than get bogged down or frustrated with one that dosent operate the way you'd like it to. but
deciding what cpu your going to run your nle on without having a specific nle in mind, is like deciding how to drive to the store without buying a car. build the system around the nle ..not other way around.

...other than the fact theres only one mouse button, and all the shortcut keys are different (i haven't seen any pc's that use "apple+shift+3")...

;D

Re: Mac or PC???

One thing you should note guys, he is talking about laptops not desktops. Being a mac tech myself, but not too bias cause I have PCs as well, Powerbook will give you less problems more stable operating system in OSX. Also right out the box you'll have iphoto, imove, itunes, and if you get the superdrive, you'll have idvd. Also you get the just newly released, garageband for creating your own soundtracks. And this is all before you spend a dime for software. Then you can move up to FC Express 2, then FCP or Avid Express for mac. Also I have yet to get a virus on my macs in the 10 years i've use them, not many PC people can say that. ;)

Re: Mac or PC???

yeah.. the only bad thing about mac laptop's is that they are so damn slow.. Hopefully someday that will change though.

Hopefully they'll work out the heat issue and be able to stuff a G5 chip in one.. there's rumor about it going around

Re: Mac or PC???

Jubal28 - that's why I said "not many", not all. But let's be real here, I not a PC basher, but we all know that PCs are more likely to get viruses than Macs...It's just a fact , there are just not that many virues geared toward macs because the business world is mostly PC.

Regarding the G5 chip in the powerbooks, they said the samething about the G4 chip too, So I'm sure they will work it out ;)

Re: Mac or PC???

yeah.. meanwhile you can buy 64bit PC laptops that smoke desktop G5's... by the time a G5 comes out as a laptop, I am sure the PC will step ahead again.

Cant argue that mac laptops look the best though.

Re: Mac or PC???

They both do the same thing and it's a matter of preference.

Except Mac owners are little more fanatical about their OS.
