Mac or not to Mac that is the question

Hi all:

Not trolling or trying to start a flame war, just a re-hash of my PC experience today at work. I started out in the 80s and 90s as a PC person. I always was able to get media work done with PCs but was also always frustrated by the lack of logic and ease of use in the various Windows OS that I used. After I had an audio post business running for two years on PCs in the Windows 98/ME era, I gave up. I was spending/losing so much money everytime there was a software/hardware/driver update that I just couldn't run a viable sound business anymore using Windows machines. Even back then, even when running Norton and Symantec virus protection, we were still getting viruses, even on machines that were islands and not on the web or even the network. Every one of our clients only seemed to want to work on ProTools, which at the time, was only available on the Mac.

Some friends showed me this new way of editing non-linear video on a PC and I was impressed but even my friends who were doing non-linear editing a hacked together PCs with various low end cards admitted that their systems were down more than up as far as usability. In other words, because of the OS, they could barely get their non-linear PC editing systems to edit most of the time.

I switched to a B&W G3 tower when FCP 1.0 hit the market and have not looked back since. I have owned a lot of Macs since then, from low end iBooks to the top of the line new G5s that I just bought recently. Because we have three new HVX-200s, today at work, we bought a new HP high end laptop and I was installing the P2 viewer and all of the P2 drivers and software for reading P2 cards on the PCMCIA slot, the P2 store and the HVX-200 on this new laptop. We really only bought this laptop so that we could use the P2 viewer since it is not available for the Mac yet. Oh my gosh, I have used all kinds of computers for over 20 years (I had one of the first Video Toasters on an Amiga 2000 as well) and I have never experienced a stupider, less logical, more complex and unfriendly computing experience than just trying to install the P2 viewer and P2 drivers on this stupid laptop. I can follow prompts and directions but at one point, the laptop had 8 overlapping different Windoze XP dialogues telling me to tell it how to open photos (none of the P2 software has anything to do with photos!), three to shutdown and restart, two telling me not to install the viewer until I had initialized and installed the other drivers. I pointed out to two other editors who were in the room at the time how XP was contradicting itself by giving me choices to shutdown at the same time it was telling me keep installing other software in order to reach a point where I could shut down and restart to install more software. Simply amazing. We actually sat down at the table in the conference room and were making fun of this OS, it is the technological equivalent of the world shown in "The Office" This way of working on a computer is insanity. Now I am not saying that all PC programs are bad, on the contrary, I think that Vegas looks pretty good and most programs that we use a lot of on the Mac like Photoshop and even AVID are pretty much the same on the PC. Our new AVID Symphony runs on a PC.

This will sound weird but I am not anti-PC (the hardware and programs) but I am anti-Windows, it is the lamest, most ill-conceived piece of bloatware ever produced. It reminds me of the worst American cars that Detroit put out in the early 70s, it's like the ultimate form of corporate arrogance that Microsoft can put out something so lousy yet still make billions because Linux and the Mac OS are relatively boutique OS's that most people are ignorant of or just don't even know that they exist. I can't imagine any unbiased person sitting down between two top of the line editing systems and choosing to deal with the Windows OS over OSX or even Linux. Most people must buy Windows because they either just don't know that other better OS's exist or they are too conservative or afraid to try something different than what everyone else they know uses or ??

Maybe it's just me, maybe I have been away from the Windows OS for too long but after not touching a PC for almost 10 years (we have on-line editors who tame the Symphony, I don't have to deal with it;-) and hearing even from Mac users that Win XP has become very "Mac-like, I was amazed at what a frustrating, time-wasting experience even installing a simple utility and a couple of drivers was. I installed the P2 drivers on our Macs in less than :20 total with no issues, click on the package icon, it installs and you are ready to insert a P2 card.

Just wanted to give a perspective of someone who has worked a lot on both platforms and touched a Windows machine for the first time in 10 years. Yikes, FCP and my G4 PB and G5 are much more productive, friendly and practical tools for me. Oh, and I just installed Virtual PC on my wifes iBook because of that nutritional software that she HAD to have that ONLY is available on the PC platform. Even running Windows on a Mac is better and I don't even know why.

BTW, FCP rocks with the HVX-200, I can even edit 720 24PN on my G4 PB running the media off of the internal drive (which as you know is a big no-no) and it is working and not dropping frames. I tried this just as an experiment to see if it would work and it worked great. Different strokes I guess and I know that there are many talented artists and creators who work on PCs, I am just wondering if it is "Stockholm Syndrome" at work where the "captors" have begun to sympathize with their Microsoft "kidnappers" and have begun to overlook how unsatisfying the Windows experience is to new users, kids, older users who haven't used PCs before?

And no, Mac's have their quirks and problems as well but they are generally easier to solve, at least based-upon my 20 years of combined Mac/PC/Amiga experience.

Best,

Dan

Disney is now all but owned by Steve Jobs after the Pixar merger so if there is some kind of huge digital media distribution breakthrough, you can pretty much count on it coming to the mac as well.

I think WMV plays on Microsoft's own OS X player to version 9, I've downloaded some wmv's which don't play - would require getting Flip4Mac. But if I understand correctly Flip4Mac gives you WMVHD-support? That would be worth paying for, to encode your videos to that format.

Flip4Mac is free
microsoft.com - you get more features with the paid version but I have run WMVHD stuff on the free version.

Nice post puredrifting,

I've recently had the opposite experience with a new Mac. I've always been a PC DIY guy (with the exception of Sinclair Spectrum and Amiga 500 I used to have) and I must say I agree on most of your points, I work in IT and have had much experience both as a professional and as a plain user and I like you have always believed that Windows is a system mainly comprised of spaghetti code built on top of a core that doesn't seem to do the job right anyway.

However, there are some things that Windows are better at: First of all accesibility: Any developer can make an application much easier on windows than in Mac OSX, the documentation is there and with detail, the SDK's etc. hence the plethora of apps on windows, which is also the main reason most ERP CRM and Banking systems are now running on Windows, not because it's stable, but because of its "accessibility" and that's something Apple is never going to nail.

Currently there is quite a number of media apps (to return to topic) from NLE's to Sequencers, Cad designers etc. that can cover the full range of one's needs in a PC without getting a Mac, Edius Broadcast proved that again recently with the HVX. The thing is Apple and any form of Media are really good friends and have always done it with less hardware , a lot of style and absolute user friendliness that derives from the general approach Apple has with OSX and all its apps.

So I guess the question is, do you need the job done easy and without much hassle, driver issues, boot up probs, viruses etc. ? Get a mac. Are you PC knowledgeable, willing and patient as a person? Get a PC

I Have both and know now that I will always need both.

Cheers.

I've cut aon a few PC apps......Speed Razor, blade, Premier (4), Cinestream, AVID and the Toaster 4 system (very fast and good at a few things...just not cutting LOL).

You can't beat FCP. P2 footage? NO PROBLEM. 600 buck Decklink..uncompressed HD...no problem.

I'm sorry...its just been funny to read all the post the last 5 months from people who will spend 6K on a camera..but nothing on an edit system.

My 2 cents is this...buy a intel imac....then put XP on it and have the best of both worlds..if you really need windows. But trust me...edit on FCP...never go back to Vegas. Seriously.

I'm a Windows developer by trade, wrote an ASP.NET book, and I owe Microsoft a certain degree of praise for providing products that have greatly helped my career. They get a lot of crap, but Windows itself is not inherently bad, and Vista is amazing (even if it does rip off OS X). There are a lot of reasons I feel that way, but I don't want to get into a religious battle here.

My disappointment comes with the editing tools on Windows. Avid released a software-only product years ago, targeting the people that can't drop five figures on a system, only to make it so hardware specific that it tends to bomb if you don't have an "approved" system. I hate that. I build my own high-end stuff and it won't run Xpress Pro. It sucks because I love Avid's interface. I like Media 100 even more (that's what I had in my last TV job, circa 1999).

So I'm considering the switch because I've played with FCP, and I like it. I like that it simply works. And when the new binaries come out for the Intel Mac, I'm going to seriously consider it. I can't deal with Avid anymore. And if I can buy a Macbook Pro and dual-boot it (or if the current build of Vista will work on it), even better, because I can continue to develop software on it too.

So for me at least, it has never been an issue of the OS, or even the hardware (though Apple hardware is generally more sexy). It's simply an issue of which editing tool does what I need without hassle.

Hi all:

Thanks for the intelligent discussion and good viewpoints. I have been on FCP since day one and I will tell you that I feel that only since V4.0 has it become a viable program for professional work under deadlines with paying clients. I had nightmares with FCP in versions V1.0 through 3.4 but once 4.0 was released, it has been pretty damned stable and I have finished several long-form docs with it that are on the retail home video market and or have aired on cable (I did two A&E Biographies with FCP).

As far as the PC thing, jazzx, you nailed it. I definitely fall into the group that just wants it to work without hassle and for the most part, the Mac and especially OSX provides that. I think it will be cool to have a dual boot system though in a year or two when I buy an Intel G5 or G6 or whatever it will be called. Options are always a good thing. I wonder if the viruses from the PC side on an Intel Mac will interfere with the OSX side or worse yet, I wonder if once the Intel Macs become popular if we begin to see more OSX/Mac viruses? Not a pleasant thought.

Best,

Dan

Well no operating system is "bad" especially when it is the foundation upon which many organizations, professionals and average users work onto, so it's not useless I too make my living out of Microsoft products and am certified by them. Like I said Windows is a "haven" for developers across and, by the way, we have your book (I'm in a software house) and its great .

However that does not change the fact Windows can be very inefficient in "mission critical" asituations and can leave an organization or a person many times in dismay. The steps Microsoft took in the NT4 core and later on, or the admitedly great W2k OS were huge. But really tell me if you were i.e a video or imaging professional that didn't know that much on windows , didn't have any friends who do, but only were familiar with the imaging or video app you use, as most people are (the so called average joes) do you honestly think that you could use windows safely and without trouble, wouldn't have to install\uninstall drivers manually, deal with windows updates, that incidentally break some video apps, update the antivirus all the time, use 2 different anti-spyware software, deal with system slow-downs, registry issued and the sort?

How about using a (1m$) multiprocessor server and realizing that assiging an odd number of processors to a windows cluster breaks windows? Windows are fine until you start to get serious, then you realize you have to be really careful on your work with them, I have no issues with that, it works for me, now how about the average joe's out-there?

The "average user" is running games on their computer more infinitely complex than any video software we use. I don't know why multi-processor clusters have anything to do with average users. Again, many of the problems Windows has are problems outside of anything Microsoft did or didn't do (see: 3rd party "security" software), and many are even cultural problems. I don't want to get into that here though because it's way off topic.

Again, in terms of editing video, the real issues come down to where the most functional software is. I'm struggling with that myself given my dissatisfaction with Avid.

With all due respect, I'd take a 180 degree opposite on this one. Edit on Vegas, never go back to FCP. Seriously. If only Vegas supported HVX footage.

It is solely for HVX editing that I adopted FCP, because Vegas just can't do it. But as an editing app, so far I like Vegas about sixty times more than FCP.

What about the other option: to dual boot on a PC and not on MAC, even an Intel one (difference in price considered)? I do not think I am alone here but hey, what if you could customly build your own PC with all the low price gear you want and run OS X on it? (as well as Vista, of course, not to cut the tail completely from the real s***** life). In this scenario you have a cheap computer, a good OS (OS X), nice NLE (FCP) and even you have your past back (WIN) for all sorts of things that you won't give up? It seem like some people are already working on it :) not APPLE, though :) :

http://www.uneasysilence.com/os-x-proven-hacked-and-running-on-an-ordinary-pc/

The guy writes that it works stable and much better than the VM Ware "solutions". Jee, I am really willing to try it at home with my PC.

Well first of all, running OS X on non-Apple hardware is probably illegal or violates their EULA. Second, without a crack, it won't run on non-Apple hardware, which is probably not legal. And third, where are you going to get drivers for all of that cheap hardware?

So for editing HVX footage, I prefer FCP to Vegas or Avid by an order of about 10,000 to one. FCP's performance with HVX footage is just amazing, the others don't compare.

Hey Barry, I'm curious as to the specifics of why you think that FCP is better than Avid for HVX footage?

For the record, I'm using Avid Xpress pro HD v5.2.3 with Mojo. And I haven't actually edited any HVX footage with it (yet).

A PC will give you more bang for your duck as it is . . . I use a PC and it smokes (Dell Workstation w/ Xeon's) . . . Quicktime is moot. You can render out .Mov / Mpeg's Files and not have QT. I use Sorenson personally and with a MAc you can't have WMV (Is that right?).

Hi John, what are you editing with? Avid? If so, what is your experience with Avid and the HVX thus far? Being an HVX shooter and Avid editor, I'd like to learn as much as I can. Thanks. :)

Dude, I still love the Amiga. :) I have their latest PowerPC box and I'm just waiting for AmigaOS4 to be finished. However, it is sort of like waiting for Christ to return. :undecided

Two frames per second (Avid) vs. multiple streams of full-screen full-frame full-rez full frame rate realtime including transitions between 'em. No brainer there. At least, that was my experience.

That's crazy! That was what - 720PN footage? What Avid system were you using? I've gotta try it myself and see what happens. I'll post my findings soon.
