Mac G5

My bro in law gets me a deal on a brand new mac G5... 300 bucks actually..
He lives in washington, I am in bay area ca. hmmm so do I make a special trip up to get this thing, or wait a couple months and plan a small vacation? Is it worth it... then What editing software do I switch to for mac? I'm used to Premier Pro and after effects.... any thoughts?

What is it? iMac or PowerMac? I'd assume iMac if it's only 300. After Effects is available for the mac, but I read somewhere they were going to discontinue development on it because Motion was very much like it. I could have imagined I read that though.

Final Cut Pro is the de facto editing software for the mac, and it's very much like Premiere. The last Premiere I used was 6.5, but it works a lot alike. Pro may have changed it up a bit, but it shouldn't be too big a hurdle.

Premiere pro is alot like the new FCP. The transition won't be hard. How bout since he lives in Washington, and it's a big drive from California, how bout he just gives it to me instead of you though....sound like a deal? :D

You're dreaming again my friend.

Well, he said he has no idea what it has in it, get this he works for Microsoft xbox and this was an email offer as a gift. First come first serve. He said they offered a couple hundred and they were gone in a matter of seconds. But he got me one. ... he wont even open the box and check on the amount of ram for me... all he said was its heavier than a pc.

NO!! pdx you cant have it!! lol

I switched from a PC with Premiere 6.5 to a G4 with FCE about 9 months ago. I've never looked back.

....but i would love to get a G5....drooool

Well damn, I guess I did imagine it. Cool to see that Adobe is still supporting the platform, I had a sinking feeling that as Apple created more and more pro applications, it would lead to the eventual demise of anything even remotely resembling third party support.

A freind of mine just got me a deal on a porsche, brand new.....$800.00 . Pardon me if I'm outa line here but a new g5 for $300.00.....Ernies voice....One of these things is just like the other.......Tell us how you got a G5 for $300.00 man, then we'll tell you how and when to go get it:)

Kdawg, your brother actually came up to me at the gas station yesterday, pointed towards his big white van and asked me if I wanted to buy some speakers real cheap. Now he's got iMacs, huh? He never told me....

I kid, I kid. :)

Do you know the exact specs on the iMac? Do you know for sure that it is a current model?

Rofl, white van in a parking lot, I've come across that a time or two... have a few stories about those... one is that a guy bought a vcr back in the day, and got a peanut packed brick in the box!!

Anyway.... he's a game tester lol, makes bookoo bucks , he actually runs a crew of guys, and he's straight out of college. He said something about the game developers all use macs to make beta versions of their new games... dont quote me on that but something to that effect. So every so often, Billy boy has insentive programs such as this offer for empoyee's only. My bro's friend already got a G5 last year, so he offered it up to him. And since I am into video editing, he offered it to me long before the e mail was sent. Bottom line is.... I'm more excited about it every day. I want to see this thing, and try it out.

It comes with no monitor BTW, but he said its over 2000 bucks worth, So I am expecting the base model with 512MB ram...... What I picture sometimes is the Quad processor... 8 Gigs... a Quadro 4400 and such heh heh

(I wonder if my sis that works for Apple can get me a brand new PC...)

I imagine we'll see the opposite once macs get more settled in their Intel chips (i.e. more companies putting out mac software). It'll be a lot easier for cross-compatibility, right?

Microsoft actually sent out Mac G5's to early developers for the 360 since they both use teh PowerPC architecture.
