Hello, after some study i need help to make defintely clear about format , crop and equivalent lenses
We know that Full Frame is a format, then we Have Super35(very simliar to aps c) and M43..and many others,,
I know that super 35 is the cinema format
So when i work with mty gh3 shooting video i need to refer to this when using lenses
I know that 50mm is considered the NORMAL lens, the more similar to human eye
When i use gh3 with vintage lenses (i use rokkor) i need to calclate the equivalent crop factor to have the equivalent of 50
For what i understand i should use 35mm lens to obtain a similar view to 50. is that right?
crop factor to super35 is 1,5?
what about adpator lenght?is it included in this calculation?it does make the focal lenght longer
i have now a RJ speedbooster..it has 0,7 factor..how do i calculate what lens i need to have the standard 50mm focal lenght?

hope i have been clear enough
thanks

Most folks shooting dslr's consider 'equivalency' relative to full frame stills field of view (FOV) so I just stick with that for my calculations. Just remember Super35 film is about 30% narrower FOV and doesn't really require a calculation for me.

Focal length * 2.08x crop factor * 0.71x speed booster = full frame equivalent

So for a 35mm vintage lens you would have either a 72mm equivalent without the speed booster or a 52mm with.

Basically you need a 24 - 35mm vintage lens to get that normal FOV depending on whether you use the speed booster or not.

Wide angle is where the vintage lenses fall down. You simply can't get a wide enough angle vintage lens and if you do find one they look pretty crappy with a speed booster IMHO but that's another subject.

If you have a 35mm with the speed booster you get that normal FOV. If you use a 50mm without the speed booster you get a very nice portrait FOV. That combo will serve you very well for most situations. Add a native 12mm m43 lens to get that wide effect and you can do nearly anything you want with three lenses and the speed booster.

Cheers,
Pete

Just multiply by 1.39x (2.08x / 1.5x) in the formula instead of 2.08x to get the Super35 equivalent FOV.

In other words m43 is 1.39x Super35 crop factor.

m43 is a 2.08x Full Frame crop factor.

Focal length * 1.39x crop factor * 0.71x speed booster = Super35 equivalent

Cheers,
Pete

Why?

I mean, I came into the world of interchangeable lenses with a GH2, so a 4/3 sensor and lenses is all I have experience with. I know what a 20mm field of view looks like on a 4/3 sensor, I don't need that translated to another format for me to know what it will look like.

when in process of studying i need to refer to something standard
if my teacher says the normal il 50 i need to know what to use to achieve 50 in m43, that s why need to know all these
he said also that 50 is to be referred to super35 format, but as you are saying in super35 then normal is not 50
he explained that every system should make his conversion..the format adjust the measurement according to his scale
then the 50 (for example) in aps c or in 43 or ff shoould look the same, as long as you use aps c, m43, and ff lenses respectivley

A 50mm in FF will have a "normal" perspective. In APS-C it will be a telephoto. In M43 it will even more telephoto.

A 35mm in FF will be a wide angle. In APS-C it will be "normal", in M43 it will be slightly telephoto.
