M2 Lens Adapter vs. DVX100B lens

1175494983.jpg - excellent
1175494998.jpg - good

First group is way sharper than the second. I assume the second group is with the M2? Looks like you'd need to spend some more time calibrating the unit and making sure you get proper focus, and perhaps using a better lens. The stock DVX (assuming the first group is stock DVX) is kicking booty over that second group.

The second set of images are blurry as hell or looks like they suffer from random black diffusion. It gives images the soap opera look wich I think you didn't want to get ?

Correct! The first three is with the stock lens and the next set is used with a 50mm 1.4 lens. I have tried to adjust the M2 for optimal image, but have been unsuccessful. VERY FRUSTRATING. Ready to throw it on ebay!

Before you throw it on eBay please consider the following;

1. Make sure your back-focus is on Macro (That would mean somewhere around 31-35 on your DVX100b.

2. Your Z Setting should be around 79-84.

3. Take the widest lens you have, open the thing wide open F 1.4 what have you and try and open lens up for infinity focus. Try moving the M2 on the rails to and from the achromat lens. You'll find the sweet spot.

If you play around with these three things and if you have followed the setup procedure provided by Redrock you should be o.k. Your grabs should look all that bad.

Also search the forums for right cine settings for the best results with the Redrock M2.

If all else fails, list it for sale in the Market Place here on DVXUSER.
Let us have dibs on it before it goes on the front of a Sony or a Canon... oops did I say that...?

Hi, Tbueina
I just got my m2 two weeks ago and I set my M2 according to the manaul....I not sure if I did my setting correctly but here is what i have for my dvx100b and m2....
To set back focus, do it without the 35mm lens
1...turn camera focus on Manaul
2... focus number should be at 42 (MF42) or until you see the gain in cinescreen clearest
3...leave back focus alone
4....now put 35mm lens on
5...focus on an object with only on the 35mm lens
6...turn adaptor motor on to smooth it out the frame
This is how I do on my camera, but like i say I'm not sure if this is the right way to do it...With m2 footage looks smoother and sharper than dvx lens
hope this help...

I have read the Redrock manual and played around with the adapter. I suppose I will give it another shot and see if I can get the image to clear up. Thanks for the advice everyone!

Some people have discovered their M2s come out of the box with a wobbly focal disc/ground glass. Some people have opened it up and fixed this issue, like this guy: HERE

Also a lot of people (including the guy in the link) discover that it is far better to hard mount the M2 to the DVX.

I've been tweaking my M2 a lot lately and have found that the closer you can mount it to your camera, the better your edge focus will be. With my DVX, it also helped to drop the motor down as far as possible.

I think I figured out the problem. I was looking at the M2 and making adjustments when I noticed I have the 72mm HD achromatic lens on my M2. I am now going to try to acquire the SD achromatic lens and I hope that will take care of my problem. I will post screen grabs when I get everything rolling.

Don't do that! The 72mm HD achromat works fine on the DVX (I've been using it for about a year).

Though it may not be entirely perceptible on the DVX, using the SD achromat would be a step backwards.

Thanks. I talked to Redrock and they confirmed that the HD will work fine on SD cameras. They also helped me set up the focus. It looks nice and tight now. I'll post some footage of when I shoot my short film later on this month.

Not to say all M2's will need that type of adjustment. His ground glass was misaligned straight from the factory, whereas mine doesn't need any adjustments.

I'd recommend taping a Netflix envelope or something to the wall and grabbing some stills with and without the M2 (but zoomed to match the same size in frame). If all is well, you should be able to get them to be extremely close in terms of sharpness.

I had this issue and followed the instructions on that link to correct the wobble. Worked like a charm.

My setting with mine are 85 zoom and 35 manual focus..

zoom to the cinescreen first and then focus on the grain on the cinescreen. Gaffer tape the dials down so they dont move!! And then only focus with the lens and not the back focus.

Im probably repeating alot of **** that you already know, but i love my M2.
