M.V. blue light streaks

In a lot of music videos if there is a light in the shot, there is a blue light streak across the shot.

How do they make that light streak?

It's with something they call a streak filter. You can get the same effect by cutting a piece of glass to put in your mattebox, and then using a knife or razor blade to etch parallel lines all the way down the length or width of the glass, depending on which way you'd like it to streak.

I looked into it, and its around $75 for a screw on filter. A 4x4 is over $100 more. Not really worth it.
If I do get this, not sure now as it is more costly than I thought, do they come in different colours? I heard they do. I want blue, but it doesnt say anywhere what colour it is, so Im assuming is just clear.

Yeah, I know they're pretty pricey. That's why I was letting you know about just getting a piece of glass cut for a mattebox, just go to a glass store of some sort and get a 4x4 piece of glass cut. Then cut the lines in it.

Also, the color of the streaks is dependent on the color of the light in the shot.

What should be mentioned, is that these filters are created and made to emulate the natural occurring visual quality you described but being from anamorphic lens lens-flare. That is what truly causes the streaks, while the filters are the ones that emulate that look closely but not identically. I can always tell between the two. Sometimes they are enhanced or created in post effects, which I find less easy to tell, if done by a professional.

I dont have a mattebox. :/
And from what the guy in the video also said is that there are different coloured filters.
