Testing the depth of field difference between
GH5/wth speedbooster
and a
Sony F3

The crop on the Sony is 1.5 and on the Panasonic is about 1.45. They look very similar to me.

thats odd. They should be almost identical. The GH5 with a Speedbooster Ultra is also a 1.5x crop against FF. Are you sure the lens and sensor were at the same location? Just because two cameras are mounted on the same tripod doesn't mean the sensor and lens are in the same position. It is the physical location of the sensor and lens that determine the FOV and not where it gets mounted to a tripod.

I messed up. I placed them wrong. I thought the GH5 had less of a crop but its pretty much the same.

What I had heard was that a M43 sensor even with a speed booster equalizing the same field of view will still have a longer depth of field then a S35 or APSC sensor. I was attempting to test that out. I'll take another video tomorrow.

Yes, the Speed Booster does not change the DoF of a given lens, it just puts more light on the sensor, it does not change the F/stop as far as DoF is concerned. So a f2.8 lens on a SB is still a f/2.8 lens, with the same given DoF at any given subject distance. The focus distance has more to do with DoF at any given f/stop than any other factor.
Cheers

Yeah the DOF of the lens itself doesn't change but the FOV can change the DOF based on how the subject is framed. So if you wanted to frame just the head of a subject with the focal reducer the camera has to get closer which in effect changes the DOF and focal plane. when you add a focal reducer to a m43 camera you essentially make the sensor act like a s35mm size sensor so you get the same DOF as you would on a s35mm camera when the subjects are framed the same. A focal reducer is a lens and lenses affect both ends just like a magnifying glass. Lens gets wider or the sensor gets enlarged. Thats why I prefer to think of focal reducers in terms of how they change the sensor and not so much the lens. a 35mm lens on a GH5 with a Speedbooster is more or less exactly the same FOV and DOF as that same 35mm lens on a s35mm camera. You essentially now have a s35mm sensor camera in almost every way except for the ability to raise the ISO to higher levels due to the larger pixels on the sensor. Something the GH5s solves.

Yes, as I said, the subject to camera distance has more to do with DoF than only other factor.
Cheers

Ah so its pretty much as I thought. A S35 camera and a M43 camera with a speedbooster will look the same.
