guys
seeing what your thoughts are on the lut box by aja - coming soon - working with the f35

or have you guys figured out how to view a lut on the f35 and still record s log?

thanks!
Ed

Hi Ed,
I am definitely looking into getting one.
It would allow me to finally have a render-less dailies workflow using uncompressed S-log files during editing by allowing me to apply a quick 'one-light' look to all footage.
I currently edit with uncompressed DPX, so the LUT box would now reduce any rendering overhead, supplanting software solutions like LUT buddy or the Lumetri filters over my dailies.
My hope is that Pomfort supports AJA with their Live Grade app, so that we can really begin to play with live grading on set.

With this box, you could essentially create a 'master' LUT, load it to the device, and wire it to your monitor out feed so clients could see a more refined graded look. Pretty cool.
The more I work with the F35, the more it feels like working with film (in terms of having a great digital negative). It's great to light for what I see on set, and have it reflect so clearly in the s-log. :)

What do you mean?
Dont you record slog and monitor with Luts? That's the way to do it with evfs and external monitors.

last time i tried I couldn't get a lut out - maybe i need to be in cine mode to do it. i usually shoot in custom mode to have better control over white balance.

oh yes thanks found that lut menu - still i wish i could put some custom luts in it - but can't have everything!

You can add custom mluts...you just have to code them so the f35 can read them. The manual has a section on how to code them bit by bit.

I considered tackling this, and then recording from the Monitor output, which would give me a lutted image straight from the F35, but in the end I didn't think I could do much better than Hypergamma 5.

So you use Hypergamma 5 over S-log? Why? No time to grade?

Using it for the current project we're shooting, yes. Hypergamma 5 to Prores 10bit 422 for quick turn around low budget corporate shoots. Looks fab right out of the box. Slog Prores 4444 12 bit for the fun stuff. Why force a more extensive grade on a project that doesn't call for it?

You really should get one one of these days, SJX. You'll love it.

I'm hunting for one. I found one to rent and they would sell it to me if I like after renting.

What recorder you use to record Prores 4444 12 bit?

odyssey 7q for me is the best right now - the camera is light and good for doc work where i have that thing handheld for 10-12 hrs a day. but the pix 240i is a reliable beast. I love that guy too.

Odyssey 7Q doesn't record 12 bit so can't be best now. I know they say they will support but I don't have solid feeling about this. By what Mitch say here and also in cinegear interview I think this is not priority at all. He keep saying they make what most need and we are not most. I don't want to buy it and wait forever.

I think I'd rather have a 10 bit recorder with good ergonomics and lots of useful features,, than a 12 bit recorder that weighs more and has to hang off the back of the camera. Just my opinion.
