Lunar Eclipse Timelapse Footage

This pretty much sucks but is kind of interesting at the same time :D

This was the second half of the lunar eclipse last night. It ran out of the frame a bunch of times so it's hard to get a sense of continuity. I used the regular 1.6x teleconverter with this because the addition of the extra 2x (mentioned in my Eclipse Grab post) gave me no time in the frame at all, the image was too big and lasted about 10 mins before I had to reframe.

I exposed for the dark side rather than the light so you can see it turns into a white blob with no detail. But you will also notice that the exposure changes a little bit on some shots...I kept experimenting....enjoy!

The moon seems a little eliptical in this file, I may not have had the compression settings just right, but you get the idea...

Re: Lunar Eclipse Timelapse Footage

Great job! When that moon moves past the treeline its magic I tell you! Magic! Thanks for doing that!

Re: Lunar Eclipse Timelapse Footage

cool, I likes. I new I should have done mine in real time. I used the timelapse and it jums around.

Thanks for sharing Disjecta

Re: Lunar Eclipse Timelapse Footage

angrymexican, you can speed your timelapse up in you NLE and apply frame blending to it. This will smooth out some of the jerkiness.

Re: Lunar Eclipse Timelapse Footage

Hey thanks for the suggestion. I didn't even get a chance to capture it. I live in the San Berardino Area and I have to tell you , last night was awesome, I had clouds cover the moon in and out as they passed by. As you might know we have been getting rain the last few days and it just made it cool looking. I tried to get that spooky look when clouds pass over the moon. And well, I am new to this and coul not get the proper exposure, the clouds don't eve show up.

Once again thanks for the suggestion.

Re: Lunar Eclipse Timelapse Footage

That was nice to watch. Better than straining my neck all night watching it! :)

Yes, as mentioned earlier, the point where the moon passes before the trees was a cool moment.

Re: Lunar Eclipse Timelapse Footage

Amatuer astronomers have been doing this kind of stuff for years. Disjecta, come 2007, you might want to check out some of the cheap rigs people have built to rotate their camera through the arc of the moon's path, so you can capture a lot more of the event.

Anyway, thanks for the grabs and clip!

Re: Lunar Eclipse Timelapse Footage

Of course, by then, you'll have moved on to Panasonic's DVX-HD prosumer camera...

Re: Lunar Eclipse Timelapse Footage

wow! really impressiv, even magical, as john said.

i'd like to have that teleconverter... i really miss 16x or 20x zoom on my dvx. i had some experience on shooting full moon sequences with the canon xm2 (20x zoom). of course, it doesn't look like shot with the dvx, but i got some nice results even looking well with the moon in full frame using some digital zoom, might say: it was showin up the man on the moon :)
