Lumix Lx3 Hybrid?

No.

The D in DSLR stands for Digital and the D in HD for Definition so it's a sort of cumbersome acronym. Plus it doesn't address P&S and the Gh1 which was the point were are addressing.

Isn't HDSLR the accepted acronym for these types of cameras??

I dunno, I've seen and used vDSLR where v obviously stands for video. Too many CAPS in one go makes me confused.

I think the anachronistic mechanical mirror box viewfinder is of less importance to most people than the concept of interchangeable lenses. The latter is what they think of when hearing "DSLR". Very few actually know what SLR stands for and why it was a big deal half a century ago.

I personally like EVIL, so I'll stick with that!

Stop sticking onto me.

We could also stick a D for digital onto EVIL and make DEVIL camera.

I am sure Panasonic's marketing department are missing a trick here ;)

With point and shoots being called hybrids and with the GH1's lack of mirror box we need a new term for vDSLRs....I propose ILLSVCTATP....short for Interchangeable lens large sensor video cameras that also take pictures (gh1, maybe if HPX-170 gets a m4/3 makeover with lenses...) and ILLSSCTATV for Interchangeable Lens large sensor still cameras that also take video (5D mkII, Nikon D300s, etc.)

I predict that these new, easy to pronounce acronyms will soon become common place and eliminate all confusion.

Hehe... that is a bit of a long name. I believe they already have a name... HDSLR (high def dslr) I'll just stick with calling it my HDSLR or GH1 when somebody asks. At other times I will just call it my camera. Although... little bad mofo has a nice ring to it. :cheesy:

Oh the above said, if you're looking for a hybrid P&S...Canon SX1? If you can ignore the arrogance of this poster the footage is actually respectable for a P&S..

It is very impressive - certainly holds up nicely against the typical consumer camcorder which doesn't have manual focus either. Auto exposure lock makes up for a lot. I gather the SX series does not do that well in low light, but otherwise they seem capable of delivering nice sharpness and color. You might be interested in this post (on an SX200) - the blogger shares the slightly hyperbolic style but is very much into color grading (don't judge the blog from this post alone). I'm kinda surprised she doesn't post here actually...

although no where near the 5D quality the poster suggests, or that his bizaare pleasure noises on the camera's audio track would indicate.

.... I am between the HV30 and Lumix Lx3. I know the HV30 takes quality footage and is meant for video but the pocketability of the Lx3 and solid state recording is appealing. I've have seen some pretty good footage come out of it.

Just wonderin' if anyone has had any experience with this cam, and what you would suggest.

JerryB,

I have shot 720p video with the Lumix LX2 (earlier model) and it looks great. At only 15fps, it's a little choppy but great for behind-the-scenes video. And the 720p video is as sharp or sharper than what the HVX200 produces.

The LX3 video should look great, but it lacks manual controls of the HV30.

Best,
Andrew Burke
