Lumix GX 12-35 vs Olympus 14-54

Hi Mac,

I agree with you about the 12-35 strengths, but if I remember correctly the zuiko II works with the AF100 push focus right ? Lately I was using the zuiko in the GH2.
Often I use a monitor with 100% crop / peaking to help focusing, what helps in wide shots.
Anyway, you guys convinced me about the Lumix GX

Tks,
Ulisses

I have never been able to get the Zuiko 14-54 to work with push-to-focus, and I have tried numerous times.. Admittedly I shoot 24p exclusively, so maybe it works at other frame rates, but I would bet it is way slower than the 12-35.

I would rather have both the 12-35 and 35-100 in my bag, than just have the 14-35. For the cost of the 14-35, you could probably buy both Lumixes. And they will probably take up about the same amount of space as the 14-35.

The only advantage to the 14-35, at all, is that it's f/2 throughout. Other than that, the 12-35 just makes a lot more sense. The 35-100 doesn't exist yet, hopefully we'll hear about it being introduced on Monday.

The 12-35 appealed to me until I read the review at Photozone:

Philip Bloom seems to like the combo of the GH3 and the Olympus 14-35:

I found a used 14-35 for just under $1400, but I am "confused after reading Erik Naso's positive comments.

Care to chime in?

I read the review, too, then happily picked up my 12-35 and shot great footage at a useful range and speed in a wonderfully compact and relatively inexpensive package. In no way have I ever felt cheated since purchasing one.

The 14-35 is a great lens, faster and probably sharper, and a steal if you find it under $1400, but is substantially larger, doesn't effectively autofocus, and has no OIS.

As to other alternatives, I also own the Leica D 14-50/2.8-3.5... it's optically swell, stays constant at f3.5, is effectively parfocal, but has more of an issue with visible aperture adjustments through the zoom range and does auto nothing. The OIS is also marginally effective.

For my needs, the 12-35 just works and has helped pay for itself in saved time and fuss.
