Lumix 35-100 zoom on B&H site

Ken can I borrow it when you get one? I’m still paying off the Lumix G X 12-35 f2.8.
 Hey, maybe we can swap..... if you can pry the lens loose from my hands!
Anyhow, do you use your 12-35 much for work at channel 39?

If the 35-100 is anything like the 12-35, I'M sold. These two lenses bring life into my m4/3s system that cover a great deal of focal range. The 12-35 is a really fine optic. Now imagine a very small bag packed with the 12-35, the 35-100, and throw in the 100-300 and you have a FF equivalent of 24mm to 600mm in a very small compact easy case.

Shot this with the 12-35.

Also have another being edited. It’s my go to lens right now. Dustylense nailed it! Two lenses now makes it a complete light weight kit. Now with the new GH3 announced with a more pro body these two lenses are going to be very popular.

12-35, 35-100, and then toss in a 7-14 or 17/0.95 and that's about all the kit I need for most jobs... and it all fits (with a GH2) in a smallish messenger bag.

Full frame can kiss my foot.

As a user of 17-50 and a 50-150 lenses, I can tell you that a 35-100 would be the sweetest of the sweet spot for shooting interviews.

Erik, really like the video package for the local weather. Nice shooting and editing! The 12-35 works really great for these kinds of videos, it's on my list of lenses to get. Out of interest, how do you get these gigs? Are you freelance or do you work for the channel?

I work at the station full-time. I showed them the large sensor look when I bought an AF-100 back in December 2010 and they like it. I use the AF-100 most of the time but also shoot with a Sony F3 that we rent.
With all these new cameras coming out faster than I’ve ever seen I feel buying isn’t a good idea right now. When a big company makes a substantial investment on a camera they want to keep it for around five years. No thanks. For as long as they are willing I want to rent for promo shoots.

Erik,
I remember many many years ago, I was talking to someone from KFMB channel 8. He told me that they separated the cameramen into 2 groups, news and production. It looks like you're heavily involved in production. Does channel 39 differentiate between news and production camera people, or just grab whoever is available?

We are two separate departments. I don't shoot news and they don't shoot commercial production. We have been like this for over twenty years. We have two photographers/editors in creative services. I mainly focus on news promotion and some commercial. The other guy does mainly sales projects.

I was interested in the 12-35 until I read the Photozone review. With Philip Bloom talking about how sharp the Olympus 14-35 F2 in use with the GH3, I thought buying a used Olympus might be a better choice. Comments?

As long as the extra weight and cost don't bother you, go for it! The weight of the Pentax is a deal-breaker for me, since I would have to rig some sort of lens support to use it on my AF100. But with a still camera, you just attach the tripod to the lens instead of the camera (or hand-hold the lens, with camera attached)... no problem! Looking at comments and videos by people who use the Lumix 12-35, it seems more than acceptable to me.

I am a "verite" doc/eng shooter and looking for a fast zoom through constant aperture lens for the GH2. I have the 25 1.4, 14-140 and a 50 canon fd. Trying to decide between the 12-35 and the 35-100. Any opinions?... BTW, Erik you have a nice eye. It looks so nice and warm there!

The 35-100 has become my favorite new lens. I like getting tight shots and found I couldn't with the 12-35 for doc work the 12-35 is probably a better choice. Oh heck just get both and be done with it!

Thanks for the compliment and yes the weather is crazy good here. :)

Here is a piece I shot last Sunday with the new GH3. About 90% with the 35-100. A few 12-35 and one shot with the 7-14.

Thanks, Erik. I wish I could buy both :)... I think you're right on the 12-35. A shorter (fast) lens indoors is probably wisest. I always have the 14-140 for outdoor stuff.

I have this lens and even though I am trying to sell it along with my AF100, I can say that the Olympus 14-35 f2.0 is the best lens I've used. It is razor sharp and sees in the dark. The extra bulk is due to the extra stop you get and no, it does not require any additional support at all.
