Hey guys,

Recently I've been wondering how easy it would be to match two greyscale images. In other words, how easy it would be to remap a greyscale image of higher resolution to the general form and proportions of a lower res image. There must be a means of doing this, right?

Here's my thinking....

Recently I've been playing around with some very poor images - images in which one of the channels (almost always blue) has lost nearly all of its data. So... I've been testing substituting the lightness channel (from LAB color space) for the corrupt blue channel. Granted, this isn't ideal as the blue channel tends to have fairly different properties than the luma channel. The image produced requires color correction but it seems to be one of the best means of fixing the image.

So I got to thinking... replacing one or more of the color channels from the DVX wouldn't be too hard and it would yield full Chroma! The only problem lies in the degredation of the image which can (doesn't always) occur due to the vastly different propotions of the grey scale images (luma and, say, green). If I were able to remap the luma channel with to the lower res green channel (or just create a 720x480 image and remap that) you could get a full chroma resolution. This wouldn't be as good as retaining the data in the first place but it could provide some great improvements. It may even be possible to then implement a pixel shift a debayering algorithm similar to that the Andromeda folks are using to achieve a slightly better HD "upfuz" image...

Now that I've just typed this up it hit me that this is probably what the Nattress G-Nicer filter does.. (I believe I have the right plugin name).

Thoughts?

Thanks Graeme. I'm sure your process is proprietary but do you have any information or resources I could go after in this search?

I don't know. I just came up with my idea on how it could be done with just hard thinking about the problem. There's other stuff out there I'm sure though!

Graeme

Just a quick question while we're at it Graeme. Any chance your filters will eventually be available for After Effects?
