Lucas talks about the Future again

"Yeah -- not in quality that would be in the (finished film), but we can do it roughly. We can even build digital sets and things and have them move in real time. So if we're shooting bluescreen, we can pan around and see what you're going to see, a rough version of what the final shot would look like."

that is what I was talking about in another thread... everything goes digital, and if you don't like it you can change it at any time. that is not a hard job. sometimes I feel that they shouldn't finish the film, so the audience could choose from the separated backgrounds. I hate "studioFilms", they are unnatural.

Like those books with all those words already in them. They should just give us blank pages and let us tell the story.

digital is not better; just look at the last three star wars films. lucas was too caught up with digital pefection, and missed the boat on story and natural environments. the new star wars films look like a video game.

That article makes me want to fckn kill myself. Thanks for posting it Jarred, but its just depressing....a depressing view of the future. I dont know about all of you...maybe you like the idea of all that....but it sounds like in the future...movie making wont even be movie making. It just a bunch of pointing and clicking. And as far as straight to home release....thats some bullshit. Its all about expiriencing it in the theater. I mean if the audience doesnt expirience the movie how its meant to be expirienced then whats the point? Hopefully George is just a dillusioned old man who doesnt know what he's talking about....(which is quite possible seeing as how he thinks Star Wars Ep. 1-3 were the epitome of quality.) And whats he talking about with the re-using of special effects?...what kind of creativity is that?

anyway...yeah....if thats the future...thats depressing. If thats what I'm working towards...then why work towards it.:(

not that i'll give up or anything...it just better not be like that..

I think R.Rodriguez also is working on the whole release of films in theaters as the same time as DVD/streaming... i think thats the way its going, hell, even now Theatrical releases are hitting DVD shelves in less than 3 months, instead of 6.

There is something to be said though about his reference to opera.. i think thats the way it may go, where there are only 2 or 3 movie houses in big cities... not 100s of screens like there is now.

so many of these vfx heavy movies almost dont make it in time for prints to be made...they really cut it close. one vfx supervisor i know says that at some point when theaters are all digital they will be streaming last minute vfx tweaks and shots to films just as the first showings hit....so you could be watching a movie and people will be working to finish up loose ends or shots just ahead of what your watching .

what do they say about fish, they grow to the size of their tank? its like that, if a production knows that it can go into overtime and has the ability to adjust something at the last minute, they will.

I dont think i like the idea of that..(the opera thing )....but i've heard Spielberg say it too. If thats really the case...then only the richer class of society will be able to expirience movies at they're hightest quality. I mean....i've never gone to the opera...i live out in the boondocks and am a little short on cash. I'd be the kid in the future paying for pay-per-view so that he can watch it on his left-speaker-working-only crap TV. Thats not fair and its not right. I'm guessing this "supreme theater expirience" is the switch to 3-d. Have you seen this quote of Mr. Spielbergs about his "invention'?

http://contactmusic.com/new/xmlfeed.nsf/mndwebpages/spielberg%20looking%20to%20the%20future

I'm guessing his invention is just some kind of great 3-d.

But anyway.....back to the rich and the poor....if a richer group of people and a poorer group of people are further divided...in any area of society...the movies being one in this case....then whichever group brings the most profit will be the one that the industry caters to....leaving the other side behind.

I dunno...but thats just what i'm musing at the moment.

I would hafta say its already like that.. its $15 bucks here to see a movie in a theater, and when I was in London its cost me $29 to watch Million Dollar Baby in a rather crappy little theater.

I know if I was broke, i wouldnt be spending that much cash to goto a theater.

It however will be interesting what impact HD-DVD makes on things.. TV's and projectors and some sweet home theater setups are getting pretty close to mimiking the theater experience.

And i dont think streaming movies are going to be limited to view on a PC.. my HD DVD player right now is networkable, and can pull a HD movie file off my desktop and throw it onto the 100" projector... i have a feeling thats the way it will go.

The good side to all of this, is that it will be alot easier to get distribution for all of us.. we wont get paid as much, but at least it will be easier to get out there.

Where i live its only five....at a brand new Cinemark with stadium seating and whatnot....so i guess i'm lucky here in Ohio.

I guess you're right about the distribution though...a lot easier to get stuff out there. It will just be the bigtime filmmakers that suffer...but thats what i'd like to be of course...haha.:cheesy:

It *is* kinda depressing... Not the digital filmmaking part, that's natural, but the idea of the pay-per-view release system to replace movie theatres. I enjoy going to theatres. I go there once a week, sometimes more, it's just not the same as watching movies at home. It's a part of the whole magic for me...

The magic of screaming babies, people kicking your seats, cell phones going off, snoring, talking, who-gives-a-crap projection . . . ?

I dont think its all that bad...

Which is why I usually go during the day, when it's not more than 10 people besides you :) I can see how some may not like it, but I can't help it... my guilty pleasure.

yeah im with you kidding aside.. Im there once a week and usually hit the first matinee. I cant do the Friday opening night thing anymore.

Thats just what bothers me about the whole thing....

THAT...will be gone..and it will turn into a whole "special event" that you have to save up for. If we didnt have cheap theaters with matinee's we'd have no Tarantino! He was raised on that.
