LOYALTY - gangster movie shot on DVX

For the past 8 months I've been working hard at finishing my gangster/horror film LOYALTY. A movie about real getto street gangsters but shot like a japanese/asian gagnster movie. I like to call it John Woo meets JACKIE BROWN by way of Kurosawa. I just got the website up. Check it out and let me know what you think.

Those 24p dvd's looks so nice it's unbelievable.

Here' s a link to my 'bootleg trailer' http://home.comcast.net/~towjun/Trailer512K_Stream001.mov
It's not on my site or dvd because it has temp music I can't afford. Besides, it's 4 minutes long and plays more like a condensed version of the flick. Figured this might be interesting to show DVX people here because I put the camera to the test and it was awesome.

Nice site! I really like the stills. I'm interested in following the progress of this. I like your steadycam rig btw.

Let me know when you get that san marco date, or tell thartley and maybe they'll tell me ;)

Whats the next thing you're working on? If you are interested I could show up and shoot some b roll /alt angles for you.

Re: LOYALTY - gangster movie shot on DVX

Hey I like those stills. Quick question: In one of the still shots it shows a monitor with the timecode and other display that you usually see in the lcd display. How did you get it to be displayed on the monitor. I have the first model DVX100. Is this one of the features that was put in the DVX100A? Thanks.

Re: LOYALTY - gangster movie shot on DVX

Ernest - It's a button on the remote that displays the info on the monitor. Don't have it in front of me, but it's on there. A few other owners of the DVX didn't know about it either (it's like 3 letters q--, I can't remember) Not sure if it's on the original dvx or not.

lucids - Thanks. I just got the premeire date an hour ago. It's March the 4th before the midnight showing of Carpenter's original Assualt on Precint 13 (stoked about that). Now that my sites up I can finish up the script for the new one. A story about two black best friends who must fight to the death infront of a bunch of betting rednecks!!. I'd love some help on it, warm bodies that show up on time are always needed, plus being on a set is the best way to learn how it's done.I never went to filmschool, that's how I learned.

My contact info is on the site and threre will be a casting call in the local newspaper soon. If you come to the premeire make sure to say 'hi'.

Thanks for the steadycam comment. I built it myself (I'm a woodworker by day). I'm thinking about selling custom ones on my site for like $150 dollars. It's as light as a steadycam jr and is fully balanced and adjustable. It's also reversable so you can do those cool ass requiem for a dream POV shots.

Can't wait for people to pick up the DVD and give me feedback. This was my first serious effort as a filmmaker so I'm very excited.

Re: LOYALTY - gangster movie shot on DVX

Thanks for the info Josh. I'm working on my first feature and still learning from you guys everday. Peace!

Re: LOYALTY - gangster movie shot on DVX

Oh yeah good luck. If you have any questions, my emials on the site.

When I get time, I'm gonna explain the process of making it in greater detail. You know, write the kind of thing that I wish somebody had written before I started shooting.

Ernest - On the DVX100a in the menu 6. Display Setup / Video Out OSD (OnScreenDisplay) - turn it on. It only outputs the LCD info through the composite video out, not firewire.

Re: LOYALTY - gangster movie shot on DVX

great dolly! ;D

about trailer: really liked the look and feel. Superb "blood splashes" :)
//I just had a little trouble with sound (i don't know if this is compression or my computer)

A little to brutal for me and i cannot belive "the cute blonde girl" killed "the fat funny guy" :) :)

cannot wait to see full version!

Re: LOYALTY - gangster movie shot on DVX

I had the sound problem, too.

Everything looks great. Who did the promo poster? I liked that a lot. Also liked the steadycam.

Re: LOYALTY - gangster movie shot on DVX

Thanks guys. Reviews for it should start showing up on the web in the next few weeks. I'm sending out a ton of screeners.

I'm re-editing the trailer right now. It was a quicky and I know I can doa lot better. It should be going up in a few days. I'm also working a page where I offer to sell custom hard wood steadycams for like a $150 - $200 depending how fancy you want wood. I do custom woodworking as a day job. The one I made had perfect weight and balance to it, I shot a 12 hour day with it. I'd say 70% of the shot I did on the steadycam.

I'm gonna keep updating the site with more information about how I got it made and distributed ect. I wanna make it something I would have liked to read before I devoted 8 months of my life to this movie.

Re: LOYALTY - gangster movie shot on DVX

Cool man.

Keep us up to date on the flick and steadycam. Can you include some stills of the s-cams?

Appreciate it. Good work.

Peace

Re: LOYALTY - gangster movie shot on DVX

Very nice - when it is finished I would like to see it all. I liked the classical music that you placed in it. While it might be a temp track it was cool.

I would like to know more about your home made stedicam and what mic set-up did you use to capture the voice on tape?

Keep us all up todate!

Re: LOYALTY - gangster movie shot on DVX

Sirius Doggy, I have the original DVX. Do you know if I have that feature. I've been on the road and won't have access to my DVX for another week to check it.

Re: LOYALTY - gangster movie shot on DVX

meddesigner - It's done. I've been mailing out copies like mad and actually getting invited to some real cool film festivals. IT's only $7.50 postpaid. I 've got a behind the scenes extra on the dvd that pretty much shows how I managed to shoot it.

BTW I did all the original movie music, that's why I get a cool 'CUT, SHOT, SCORED, PRODUCED, WRITTEN AND DIRECTED BY' credit. Soundtrack music isn't nearly as hard to write as I thought it would be .

Re: LOYALTY - gangster movie shot on DVX

Best Wishes for your DVD. And thanks for the inspiration. I love it that you made your steadycam and worked with friends to make your film a reality. It is an inspiration for us as we work on our first short. Thanks for the great post! Can you also tell us how much for the original steadycam?

Re: LOYALTY - gangster movie shot on DVX

Thanks man. Good luck with your stuff. I talked about shooting something 'real' for years untill I met a director who gave me the best most simple advise ever. He said the only way to make a movie is to: 'stop talking about it and just go do it'

Best advice I ever got in my life. Even if you **** up and make a **** movie you'll learn alot more than if you never tried. I also tell everybody to volunteer yourself on any local movie set. Keep quite, pay attention and ask intelligent questions. You'll learn more in a week than you would reading a dozen books.

Oh yeah, I'm a woodworker during the day so the steadycam was free. If your asking how much it would cost for me to make you one, I'm thinking it would be a little over a hundred dollars. Email or call if you want. joshtownsend@gmail.com 904-982-4938

Re: LOYALTY - gangster movie shot on DVX

John, know of any local movie sets I can come hang out on? :)

Re: LOYALTY - gangster movie shot on DVX

Lucidz - I'm guessing you were asking me right? :)

Yeah - I got a producer I've been meeting with and were planning on shooting the next short ASAP. Not that I did something on my own all the local filmmakers are being ultra helpful. As soon a this Loyalty promo **** cools off in a couple of weks were going into preproduction and the next short.

If you have a dvx, I'd love to have you come out and do second cam! Just hope your up for it cause it's gonna be a real tough flick. In a nutshell it's about two black guys who are Iraq war vets and best friends. They live in a hick town, get kidnapped and have to fight each other to the death in front of a barn full of drinking and betting rednecks. Kicker is, the whole last half of the flick (6 min) is gonna be the long, ultra cinematic fight to death between these two best friends. I'm gonna pull every trick i n the book on this one so, if you can stomach it a 2nd cam would really help with the coverage towards the end. I might even find I third camera so we can filmit all in one day and keep the 20+ extras from having to come back a 2nd day.

Any way Check the site, email me, catch me at the San MArco theater premiere next Friday at midnight or catchme at one the 3 local film fests coming up. I love to meet people who wanna help make cool movies.
