Two pieces, and a little sanding, and it functions well as a slider.

There are pre-drilled screw holes on the "track" so I just got some fine grit sand paper and smoothed out the plastic.

Works really well. Much better than I would have ever thought.

It's heavy-duty enough to hold on my T2i with a battery grip and heavy tokina 11-17 without coming out of its track.

I was impressed.

The video footage does look pretty good. how much friction is there on that grate? it looks like it wouldn't be the smoothest? did you add anything to give it more glide?

Not as much friction as you would think! I haven't added anything yet, but some lube would make it even smoother.

The other sliders use a similar type of plastic on them, but the difference is its plastic on aluminum instead of plastic on plastic...

I sure wasn't ready to shell out $156 for the Indie Slider base parts. This sure makes me happy! I was on my way to lowes tomorrow anyway.

Thanks!

Thanks so much for sharing this information! I went to Lowes today and picked up the parts for this. If anyone else is interested. The drain/track is called a Spee-D channel and the sliding part is called a Spee-D Grate. It even has end caps you can buy if you want for about $4 that will keep the sliding part from going off the edge. For a 4' channel I paid $25 and the grate/slider was $12. They also have the channel in 10' pieces.

Spee-D Channel Drain System

The plastic channel is very hard and so is the grate. I was delightfully surprised at the good drag it has. So if you have it at an angle or straight up and down, the grate will not move on it's own (of course this will not be the case when you have a heavy camera on it) but the point is, if it were loose without anything on it, you may have to work a little more for slow, smooth shots.

The grate is 2' long so my plan is to cut it in pieces. I'd like a piece just large enough to support my DVX100B. Shortening the grate will give you more room for the slide. I'm also planning to mount the channel on a panel of wood for added strength. Don't get me wrong, you can definitely use it as is, the plastic is very hard; I just feel better to just add the extra support from jump.

Apparently there is also a Spee-D coupling you can buy to add more channels and make it longer.

I'll post my developments with it when I get it all setup.

Very beautiful! I think you are right. I'm willing to take my time to get it right. I also have an automatic remote controlled pan/tilt head too so I'm going to see how well all that works together. I may be pushing it. hahahahaha

here it is from a year ago, i made one, last year, i give it a 7 out of 10 on smooth shots, if you want to take your time and re shoot shots to get it just right, this can work..

thanks! im still trying to find a part that will fit in place of the grit that will give a smoother result, no luck so far..
