Low Quality Video Output After Recording

New here and looking foward to learning how to use my new camera.

I recorded a 3 minute video onto mini dv and sent it to my editing software on my laptop via firewire.

The file size was only 600 MB... on my cheap camera, the same video file would have been at least 2 gigs. When I open up the video in my editing software, I can clearly see the quality has diminished.

Any ideas on what could cause this? I was very surprised to see the 600 MB file, when I expected it to be at least 2-3 gigabytes in size.

By the way, I was in 24P mode and I have original dvx100 if that helps any.

Thanks!

Carl

3 minutes of DV footage should be about 682MB (25mb/s)
So the file size doesn't seem all that strange.

I'm not sure what you were capturing as or recording on before, but even shooting 1080P DVCProHD a 3 minute video would only be about 2.5GB.
So I don't see how your 'cheap' camera was coming up with huge file sizes like that.

What format and framerate are you shooting?
What software are you using?
Some details might help sort it out.

Also, if you could post some grabs showing how the quality has diminished - that might help in giving you some idea what might be going on here.

600 MB is just about right for two-to-three minutes of DV25. If those other cameras are recording DV25 (which is what any Mini-DV camera records), there's no way you're seeing 2-3 GB for three minutes.

DV25 is about 12.6 GB per hour -- that's constant; any DV25 camera will have the same filesize/minute ratio.

As for the quality having been "diminished," what are you comparing between, and in what way does it seem to be diminished?

Thanks guys for the quick response.

Well I obviously was doing something wrong when I was using that small $300 canon ulura 100 camera to end up with gb size files.

Anyhow, I'm editing in Sony Vegas and the camera was set on FR 24P, if that means anything, I'm brand new to this camera so I don't know what settings to look for other than I have the Scene File on F5.

The diminished quality was noticeable after comparing what came from the cheap $300 camera after it was captured on my laptop, versus the quality that's now coming from the dvx100.

After rendering the video, I did see better quality again.

Let me preface this by saying I am shooting video for the web (for now at least). And here is what I'm getting -- I uploaded the better looking video to a flash converter.

The video before being uploaded didn't really look much better than what you see above. Any ideas of what I can do to make the video crystal clear, and obviously, something to keep the voice lined up with the moving lips?

I rendered in sony vegas using the WMV template.

Thanks a Million!

What's wrong with the video? "Quality" can mean a lot of things. What aren't you seeing that you think you should be, or what are you seeing that you think you shouldn't?

Not sure why the audio wouldn't be in synch -- check your timeline to make sure you didn't accidentally move the audio track. Otherwise, it could have been a render or flash transcode glitch.

David... you make a great point!

I wanted my videos to be super sharp and clear like these guys:

productorials.com/home
nldrtv.com/
retv.net/homes-showcase.htm

But after going back and looking at them a second time, I'm seeing mine is just as good (and if not better), than these guys.

I guess in the end, we (or "I"), are our worst critic.

Thanks for reminding me of that...

Carl
