I've read a lot of specs about the hvx, but not anywhere have I ever found anything about the low light capabilities. If someone could inform me on this I would appreciate it.
The HVX is rated at 3 lux, but of course lux measurements mean little. In actual speed rating it's about 1 stop faster than an FX1. It's about 1 stop slower than a DVX.
I hate to be a party pooper but while it may technically be only 1 stop slower than the DVX it feels like a lot more to me. What I mean is that the image looks grainier and noisier than my DVX at the same exposure as the HVX. The DVX was more forgiving of lack of light.....the HVX I am finding behaves more like my old XL2. Great images with great lighting. Average images with moderate lighting. Poor images with bad lighting. My DVX seems to break those rules and tends to produce really good images all the way down into the bad lighting category.
And to be clear I am talking about the quality of the image...not the artistic design. It just seems the DVX was so forgiving shooting even dark rooms that the HVX looks off in the same scenario. IF there was a graph with a curve representing a relationship with light and picture qulaity the DVX would be very straight whereas the HVX (like my old XL2) would be straight and then take a fast dip at the point that lighting becomes questionable. This is my opinion anyway.
I still love the camera but find it much more finicky than any shooting I ever did with my DVX.
