Low light shooting & gain settings?

Hi everyone, i did a dive the other day before the sun came up so it was effectively a night dive & then the sun rose while i was underwater.
With no ambiant light & with visibility about 2-3metres (6-10ft) i know i was pushing the HVX200 to its limits but i was using my LED video lights to light up the foreground.
Now my question is, in those conditions the noise was clearly visible in the monitor while i was shooting so i knew the footage was going to be pretty average anyways, BUT, if i had added 3 or 6db gain obviously that would help with brightening the exposure but would it add even more noise to the footage or would you think that adding more gain would have reduced the visible noise because the overall image would be brighter?
Does that make sense to anyone?
I thought about this when i was downloading the footage as i never add any gain while underwater as i want as clean an image as possible but obviously it couldn't be avoided in this situation.
Here is a little video from the dive so you can see how dark it was at the start of the dive, watch it in HDef of course.
Cheers Pete.

Thanks Al, I'm going up the coast next weekend to film some sharks so I'll post that footage when I get back.
Cheers pete.
