Low Light/High ISO: A7RII vs. A7S

Nice test, but the youtube codec seems to be doing much more harm than the ISO :(
In any case, impressive that it is so close to the a7S in APS-C mode

WOW. In S35 mode the A7R II looked cleaner than the A7S. It seemed especially noticeable at around ISO 8000-10000.

What an extraordinary camera

Thanks!!

My notes while watching this:

a7R II FF starts to get noise at ISO 5000, by ISO 10000 I wouldn't use it without heavy NR
a7R II APS-C starts to get noise at ISO 20000
a7S FF starts to get noise at ISO 20000

a7R II is cleaner at APS-C ISO 25600 than at FF ISO 5000
a7R II APS-C seems to be on par with a7S FF

Which makes the a7R II APS-C the new low light king, since you can put a speedbooster in it, keep the iris of the lens unchanged, and get one extra stop of light and the same DoF.

Right now I use my a7S at ISO 3200-6400-12800 in FF mode, and 3200-6400 in APS-C mode. If I had an a7R II, I would use it at ISO 800-1600-3200 in FF mode, then, if needed, switch to APS-C with speedbooster and use it at ISO 3200-6400-12800. Then the slow rolling shutter would only be an issue in low light conditions.

After seeing this (and this), I wouldn't consider an a7S II with internal 4K and IBIS unless it either had some other improvement over the a7R II (like slog3 at ISO 800 for an extra stop or two of DR) or was significantly cheaper ($2200 or less, which sounds unlikely).

Nice summary/analysis, Samuel. Promising indeed. But I'd still appreciate to see some real tests on moiré/aliasing in different shapness settings down to the lowest, as for instance ; ) before the jury to rule out on the subject matter :-)

Would speedbooster on the a7RII work on non EF-S lenses?

The Speedboosters don't currently work with some EF-S lenses but they do work APS-C lenses like the Sigma 18-35 and the Tokina 11-16. There is a protrusion on the back of EF-S lenses that prevent it from mounting to a speedbooster. I believe some people have taken a DIY route and somehow removed the protrusion but this obviously negates the warranty and there is always the chance of screwing it up...but if you are handy with that sort of thing it might be worth a try.

I don't have any EF-S lenses, I guess what I was trying to ask is would you get the vignette with the speedboster? I'm guessing you wouldn't if you used the camera in S35 mode? Can you shoot in S35 mode for stills as well? Thanks.

You need FF lenses to use Speedbooster. APSC lenses don'y work with speed booster

I am blown away... :O Unicorn of cameras has just arrived from a Sony rainbow.

OT
This idea, just curious if possible... Medium format lens + speed booster (plus some adapter) on A7s/rII?

Doesn't the rolling shutter in the S35 mode put any one off a tad?

It just seems really bad. I dunno, perhaps I'm over analysing it...

Yes, but it's not as bad as A7s FF which i what i'm with at the moment.

It's sorely tempting, the IBIS alone makes hand holding realistic plus it's handling normal noise better and XAVC seems quite nice so far.

I'm hoping we get some kind of nod to the A7s II soon, then decide...

cheers

It appears a7rII s35 has worse rolling shutter compared to A7s FF:

Wow. Overheating and losing shots. Just lost 1 sale if this is a consistent problem. Absolutely can't have that and it trumps the cameras strongest feature.

I've questioned other early adopters and no one found any trouble up to film-like 10 minutes length yet...
