Low light - 720 60p or 1080 30p?

Both modes have equal sensitivity. However, you could go to 1/30th shutter in 1080/30p, which would give you an extra stop of light.

I actually just filmed a concert with those exact settings and was very happy with the results. Found it to be about 1/4 stop darker than my DVC30 (DVC30 was at open and HMC40 was at open 3bd). With your lowlight setting, this combo worked pretty well. Thanks.

Do you have a sample posted anywhere? Just a clip, say, 30 seconds or so?
I'm looking at the HMC80 (apparently will use the same chips and imaging block as your HMC40) when they come out this fall to replace my DVX and wonder how they'll compare.
Barry did mention stop down the DVX to f2.8 and kick in 1/8 ND to see how it would compare to the 40 which...kinda scares me. Even for a decently lit stage with kids dancing on it.
