Low internal mic level, is this normal?.

Hi All

I've noticed on my DVX100a that given the same gain settings, I get very low recording levels compared to when I attach an external mic. Given the same settings and same sound source (quite conversation) and distance (about 4 feet), the internal mics might have dB levels in the range of -40 dB whereas the external mic will give me levels of around -12 dB. Has anyone else also seen this? Is this quite normal? Seems like the internal mics are useless for anything except very loud sounds.

Quite normal. The built in mics are for ambient recording. They are omni's and would record a lot of camera sound, if their snsitivity were too high.

External mics are the order of the day, and Panasonic intended it to be that way.
