Hi,
I'm currently prepping a feature length music documentary set to be shot in L.A. in a a bit over a months time or so.
The doc will be covering a band recording their album, a concert, interviews and other general fly-on-the-wall stuff.
I live in London and currently own:
An HVX w/ 2 x 16 gb P2 and a couple of batteries
A Sony ECM-673 mic + boom
Libec TC-60 tripod
A Fig-Rig
Macbook Pro 17"
DuelPro Adaptor
What other basic gear do you think I should get to bring with me?
I have a big issue at the moment over whether or not to buy/rent another HVX. I could get one from the UK and bring it with me but obviously it would be easier to get one out there. However, as I intend on shooting 720/25pn if it's an American camera I take it I won't have that setting available? The theory behind getting another one is just to improve the coverage we could get and it would come in especially useful during concert footage.
But of course if I get another camera then I guess I have to double up on sound gear as well.
At the moment the crew consists of myself and one other. Partially because the project is self-funded but also because we're friends with the band and want to be able to shoot at all hours and hiring anyone people outside of the group as crew would prevent this from happening. If I was to get another camera then we'd both operate and have to use external, camera mounted mics for handheld and stick the boom in a holder for sit down interviews. If we had just one camera we'd switch between operating and booming which I guess would be better although both of us have limited sound recording experience/knowledge.
The other big issue is storage. I'll have to buy at least one if not two more P2s so I can switch out to transfer and be able to keep shooting. Then as far as storing the footage, I guess I'll have to try and go through the footage and trim whatever I can as I go to keep it down to a minimum but what external hard drives can I bring with me/get out there that are portable enough but also give me enough space as I guess I'm going to be in the ballpark of 2TBs and upwards?
What else?
I was thinking of getting a Spiderbrace delivered out there already as they are reasonably cheap and I won't have to worry about bringing any stabliser gear with me.
I also will bring a little Sony Handycam DV just to have for any situations where I can't get the HVX up and running. The band have been shooting some bits and pieces with a Canon XL-1 which I just realised will be NTSC so will I have any problems if I wanted to use any of the footage they've shot already or will be shot during my time there (apart from the difference between HD and DV)?
Thanks so much
