Low audio problem

I started recording right out of the box, but when I played it back on my tv, I had to turn the volume way up to hear dialogue. I have a Sony Digital 8 Handycam and the sound on that is great, except for that darn tape noise. Is there any setting on the DVX 100A where I could up the fidelity?
 
The DVX has a pair of level controls (one for each of the two channels) located just below the flip out LCD screen. Are you aware of these?

I was fiddling around with them last night. I thought they were for when the mic is attached. Or mics. I've tried looking on my manual to up the volume on the input, but I can't find it. How do I up the input level for it? If I can.
