The film contains some unpleasant scenes and is not safe for work or for children. I would love to know what people think of it, good and bad.

Thanks for watching,

Hi, I have recently completed editing a short film I wrote and directed in the latter part of last year and beginning of this year. I am currently working on the grade, and finishing up the sound design and score with my sound man.

I will update this thread with behind the scenes stuff from pre production and the shoot, and continue to update as the film nears completion and is entered into festivals.

The trailer has just been released, and I would love to get some feedback on it and see what people think, good and bad.

LOVER BOY is a new short film by Max Swinton, to be released in 2011.

Jack and Chlo fell in love. They love each other very much. But Chlo can be cruel, her behaviour erratic. As Jack's increasingly fragile state of mind begins to rapidly degrade, he will have to choose between facing up to the fatal flaw in his and Chlo's relationship, or exploring his own potential for cruelty to it's fullest potential.

Starring ZACH SELL HANNAH WILDER CALLUM FULLER

Written and Directed by Max Swinton

Produced by Max Swinton and Zach Sell

Original score by Stuart Torrance

Shot on a Canon 7d with Contax Zeiss and Nikkor lenses.

Thanks for looking,

Wow. Great trailer. From the perspective of a potential audience member, it certainly got my interest and made me want to see your upcoming short.
Although the flashing images at the end was a bit much -too long- which was somewhat irritating.

Thanks very much, that's good. That's interesting, I debated making that part slightly shorter, but found that length was the most effective, at least to me.

Well it's not "Snowhite and the 7 dwarfs"..... Or Cinderella....

There are indeed some "explicit scenes", but in my opinion it's something that must be something that can be. We were all born...so all of our parents once had to... (you get my point....).
So regarding to that I (personaly) don't see any isue. Maybe because the PG in US is "stronger" then in Europe ? And maybe we're used to a lot more ? :-p

Now, back to serioucity :-p

I think it's a bit to long. You've got the "guy loves girl", "guy dreams he lost his girl and just wants to have beep (I'll fill in the beeps myself :-p)", "guy is out of the dream, happy ending".
Some scenes are to long...you can go "in the action" quicker I think.

It's recorded with the cam mic ? To be "closer" with the characters, some Foley (specialy movements, so clothes, handlings) can do a lot. Even with some "room reverb" on it to make it fit with the dialogues
it will give a big difference.

Some dialogues are "hard" to understand.... But that might be me... As in that I have to listen again, and then when I listen carefully I have a reaction like: "aaaah ok, what color are your eyes ? ok..."

Good things are that you don't put music in ALL of the film, but also have "silence".

The flashing frames.. the give something creepy, creepy ideas of what could have happened. Did the girl the same to him as he did to that boy on the bench ?

Thanks for the comments Dre83, I appreciate it. The film was actually made in Scotland, I just thought that some of the content might be a bit much for some people.

I understand your comments that it's a bit long, and maybe it is. I was going for a very methodical, clinical, measured pace with as few cuts and angles as possible.

It was actually recorded with a boom mic going into a little zoom recorder, and the end scene was recorded using ADR. I think the issue could be that the end scene dialogue is too low in the mix because we test screened it in a cinema and it sounded great, however through headphones or computer speakers the dialogue can get a bit lost, i'm not entirely sure. We did have some clothing rustle Foley for that scene but in the end we took it out because it added too much realism, which sounds strange, but we were going for something more artificial and odd. The intent was to keep everything as sparse as possible, from the way it was shot and edited to how it sounded.

Your interpretation of the story is interesting, and I wanted the film to be more about the atmosphere and emotions created by the scenes than the narrative content, so I won't go into what it's about to me.

Thanks again for the comment.
