"Love" a new short film by Ted Arabian

Ted, I just wanted to drop in and say I really liked your short. Definitely the best of what you've done. After wading through the close to 40 pages of posts, I don't think I can say anything that hasn't been said already, so...good job, congrats, and hope you're in the next fest too!

The way the story played out it seemed it was just another story about the average affair. Everything changed as soon as he threw the cash down. My perspective really took a swing on things. For example, I initially thought it distasteful to open with the sex scene. I though why dont we see much of this guy. I cant identify with him. I dont even remember how his face looks like. Obviously, all of this was brought to perspective when we find out she is a pro. These choices changed from what I thought to be bad choices to great choices. To see "Love" from her point of view was an interesting take. Solid concepts.

Arrik, thank you for taking the time to watch and to share this insight. Really very cool to hear someone articulate this.

When I wrote this story, I really wanted to take the viewer down the path of....

"Oh, this is a couple in some very lavish bed and breakfast!" to....

"Ohhh.... this is an affair!" to.....

"OMG, she is a prostitute!!!"

So, thanks for sharing those comments. It is great to hear.

As for the camera movements, I am learning so much about how to and when to use them. I just don't know these rules... it seems like there is a different set of meanings and interpretations for each individual filmmaker. I guess it is all a matter of taste.

I do know that I use my jib as a floating tripod a lot. I love the freedom of moving my camera about in the scene. I guess it is like a stabilized handheld. I suppose on my next film I will aim to use the static shot more.

So much to learn!!!

Thanks for watching and writing!!!

Best to you.

Hey, hey, hey.... always great to see the man himself on these pages.... Mr. Herman Witkam!

Herman, thank you again SO MUCH for providing such a wonderful soundtrack. I am just in awe of what you did in so little time.

Next time buddy... the whole sound design is yours!

Best,

Hey Jaime,

Thanks again for watching and reviewing! And appreciate you wading through the pages.

And I do hope that this is the best that I have ever done. I really do try to apply what I learn from experience and from what you all have to say!

So.... KEEP IT COMING!

Best,

Hey Ted,

I'm late to the party, I know. Just wanted to let ya know that I JUST watched the short and I thought it was pretty damned good for your second go! In fact, REALLY good. Seemed like you pulled together some nice resources for this one.

Different way to portray this sort of character, and I actually like the direction that you've gone. I certainly couldn't pull off anything with such mature context m'self. Takes someone with a more seasoned mind to handle it with the kinda maturity that you see here.

Some dialog didn't work for me, but the point is that the most of it drove home the real plight and her still-looping struggle to find love through sexual behavior. It's pretty sad!

I must say the set direction was very interesting. Kind of out there where colors are concerned and I think that alluded to (for me anyway) the profession of this woman.

If I had anything to pick at it would be camera motivation. Not that it was bad, but I think I would ask what the motivation was behind certain shots. For example: Stocking shot? Was this to establish her "profession" without literally spelling it out? Or simply going after a beauty shot?

And the shot lingering down across the woman's waist/belly when she goes to pick up the stocking. I wonder if it's the matte that's making it seem off? Perhaps.

Either way, it's OBVIOUS that you've progressed since your first fest entry! Hope my progress is a leap like this one.
