LOUD AUDIO HISS on HMC - WTF????

hey all-

I've noticed that the HMC records a really load audio hiss on all the tracks. the hiss is louder on the internal than on other mics, but definitely quite noticeable throughout, especially compared to my dvx.

what's going on?

I am definitely dissapointed in the amount of preamp hiss on the 150. It the first pro cam that I have owned, and I expected more clean audio. I've been using external pre-amps to use as little gain from the 150 as possible where the situation allows.

I saw you talking in the other topic that this happens in FCP, as well - but I want to point out that I find much more hiss through the headphone jacks than I do playing back the raw footage on the computer.

You can go into the menu and turn down the sensitivity... I don't know what you have yours set to, but I keep both of my channels on -50... VERY clean on my DVX but I don't know about the HMC. Panasonic wouldn't make a camera with bad audio so that may be your problem.

hi allen-

are you talking about the .mts files or the transcoded files?

The .mts files - I didn't bother transcoding those test shots, just played 'em in VLC. Tried with the onboard mic and an XLR shotgun with the same result: hiss on recording/playback on camera, but clean through the computer.

I am having the same problem, definite ambient hiss when played back through headphones or through the cam's built-in speakers, any solutions?

Monitor your sound on your computer to see if you get the same result.

My HMC audio is really clean.

I've noticed that the hiss is really just in the headphone jack and usually its when the volume is all the way up.. AND.. I've noticed it happens when theirs some high pitch sounds and or very bass rich noise. Doesn't end up on the final recording.. thank heavens.. but it is highly annoying when shooting in cam. Doesn't show up all the time, but shooting an exterior with krickets was really annoying and there sounded like old cassette hiss in the phones..

Old cassette hiss is exactly what I'm hearing when using headphones to listen to takes. Great to hear that it doesn't show up in the final version, appreciate your taking the time.

i got the hiss too and its even recorded when i turn both CH1 and CH2 wheels to zero. why is there people reporting the onboard sound to be clear? seems that one cam does it and others dont?

i uploaded three short MTS files with CH1 and CH2 0%, 50% and 100%
the files where recorded in a very silent room with no electrical stuff around.
could someone please quickly check if this is normal.

looks like that i have to shoot an interviey in ny the next week. Ive been readin of these external mics to be good: Audio Technica AT875, Rode NTG-2 but im really on low budget after buying the cam. Would these mics eliminate the hiss and give me a clear voice for the interview?

I found that this hiss only exists when I do playback using headphones, have never had a problem with a timeline or rendered output file, sound is clean on DVD, TV, film screenings, etc.

thanks! this is wired.. did you try with these files i uploaded?
i have this ugly sound when playing in vlc (on both macbook and pc), when imported in premiere and of coure in the exported file. I use headphones as well

what can i do vs this noise?

Ok, so you got hiss. I listened to your recording of this, but it's odd. There is definitely a bit of hiss through the headphones when plugged into the headphones out, but there is no hiss like this on my recordings, even with the built on mic. I can get rid of it through the headphones by turning down the audio volume on the dialers on the left side.

Anyway, don't worry about the hiss through the headphones, but not sure that if you are recording hiss like this that your machine isn't defective. We are all making a lot of assumptions here about how your settings are really set on this camera. If all our assumptions are really correct, and we are all in alignment, and you really are recording this amount of hiss on your SD card, showing up in FCp, then take your camera to a dealer and see if you can match this by putting it side by side with another 150. My bet is that either your machine is not working right, or that your settings are somehow set wrong.

And yes, I too use the Audio Technica AT897 with great results. I like this mic a lot. But each mic has it's own voice. It will depend on your shooting. An interview should have a hand held mic up close to the mouth. You've seen that on tv plenty of times. Not sure the 897 is the right mic for that kind of job. I would be using my Octava for that.

Thank you for the diagnostics. There might be something wrong with the cam if you say that you can turn off the noise completely with turning the audio dilers to 0. even when the mic is not recording the noise is still there.

I would love to go to my local dealer but the problem is that the guy ordered the cam for me and there is no secont to compare with. So i depend on you to get this solved.

I tried everything i can imagine.. how can i determine if this is normal or a faulthy sth on the cam?

what comes next?

have this camera for 5 days now and every das i find something wired on it..
today i realised that the autofocus makes such a loud noise that it will be picked up from the onboard mic as well and gets recorded.

this happens when im in full tele and the autofocus tries to sharpen the image. than it stops. while it is focussing and making the noise the autofocus is very jumpy as well.

is this all normal or should i take it back for a replacement cam?

if this is normal, can it be solved with an extenal mic? no hiss, no servo and autofocus noise?

is there a good mic which can be mounted on the cam and used as a hand held for intervies as well? the Audio Technica AT897 seems to be a bit long for that purpose. (i dont know much about mics though)
