Lost everything

Hey everyone,

Just thought I'd share that on Saturday I got my 2000 2dr Silver Honda Civic stolen!
It had my gps and my new canon 7d in it with all my other film equipment!

:crybaby::crybaby::crybaby::crybaby:

but it doesn't end there, I don't get any insurance money for any of it. The deductible is too high so it wouldn't be worth it.

So im sad, I have to start all over with my film equipment.

I do have an old HV30 and a nice shotgun mic. But nothing compared to the 7D.

UGH sadness.

This happened at Cerritos Mall in California btw.

Sorry for your loss, man. Really.

On the bright side, Canon is releasing a new camera (550D) that seems much cheaper than the 7D that you should be pretty happy with. I know it still costs money, but at least the price is down.

One of my biggest fears. I feel for you. But at least it wont happen to you again 20 years down the road with your Ferrari and RED 56K

I never, never, never leave my equipment in the car unattended. I've known to many people to have their cars broken into where cameras and equipment were stolen.

That really sucks big time. I had many friends who got their car stolen right in front of their face. Man, hope the police find those bastards. I drive a Honda Civic myself and I also live in car theft capital in the nation! I don't leave anything valuable cause you'll never know.

Thanks for the comments. Ya I've learned my lesson for sure.
I usually don't carry that much stuff in my car, I was just at the wrong place at the wrong time.

The crazy thing is that everything was in my trunk so if you look inside theres nothing appealing. My car is completely stock too. We were only gone for 15 mins! so its like wow....

I think one of the saddest things was that we just finished a shoot, so we lost all of our hard work. Stuff like that is invaluable.

Hey Josh:

I'm sorry your car was ripped off and your gear too, that is a real bummer. As much as Honda Civics are good little cars, they are the most stolen car in the U.S. A pox on the schmuck that stole it.

Dan

Sorry to hear that.
I still remember when one day I had to take all my theater lights (fresnells, moving light, two dimmers, lighting desk......) to class. I had to leave the car parked alone for 4 hours, I was pretty sure that nothing would happen, but you always have that fear of someone entering the campus and stealing the car........

Well, you might actually have been followed from your shoot location or it was just an incredible stroke of luck and timing for the bad guys.
Either way, this reinforces my natural paranoia about leaving anything in my car.
As cliche' as this may sound, it could have been a whole lot worse. You could have lost more gear or you could have been hurt in the process. I remember reading a few years ago about a member being assaulted by a guy who had someone in public strike up a conversation then grab his DVX right out of his hands. He got it back but damn, who wants to be a target for that kind of crap?.
Be aware, be safe.

Whenever I finish a job it doesn't matter how much of a hassle it is, but I drive straight home and unload, even if I'm going to return in the same general area to meet-up with friends or whatever.

I TOTALLY feel you.

About 3 years ago I was heading to a shoot. Stopped by my attorney's office to sign some paperwork. I was, "Just going to be a few minutes".
Finished up, hopped into my car and went to the shoot. I didn't even notice half my gear was gone until I went to unload. Lost about 8 grand worth of camera, digital slrs, cell phone Lectro wireless and so forth. And I lost the gig ($). At least I kept my car.

I suggest you get serials numbers (if you have them) of all your gear (and car) file police reports and go on the warpath. Check craigslist, ebay local flea markets and pawn shops.

Sadly, though, it's probably lost in the void. Pick yourself up, dust off. and start over.
Don't let it get you down.

Good luck, Jeff.

Holy crap, my parent's house is pretty close to that mall, but I've never been to it (now I'm glad I haven't!).

From one filmmaker to another, I pray that you'll find your stuff..

First of all, I'm sorry about your loss. But...just curious about your deductible or deductibles. What was your Comprehensive coverage's deductible? Is your insurance company saying there is a deductible for the car and another one for its contents?

Don't be too quick to accept what they tell you. Have someone knowledgeable about insurance policies read yours carefully. Even reputable companies attempt to wriggle out of paying what people are owed. And, if the police never locate your car, remember that you can negotiate the value of the loss; you don't need to simply accept what they tell you. Include important details to buttress your arguments.

Good luck.

Oh man, I hate that. I had a car full of gear stolen once when I lived in Detroit MI. Luckily, the BIG camera and support gear stuff were the property of the local cable access department and that was covered through their insurance. The sad part is that I had a 2400 watt lighting kit that I had put together, that was personal property, was also stolen, so I had to eat that. It was the same thing, we weren't gone more than 15 minutes and the car was gone. I hope there is a special place in hell for car thieves. I did learn my lesson though, and after living in Detroit for 18 years, and having 5 more cars stolen, I never, ever left filmmaking gear unattended in a car again.

i've never had a car stolen, but i have had one broken into. it's very unsettling feeling. oddly enough one of the things they stole was a half eaten bag of lays sour cream and onion potato chips. not sure if they broke in for the chips, or if that was just an added bonus for them.

but hopefully the police will be able to find your stuff.

It's a horrible feeling having something taken from you. You won't lose that feeling any time soon but, eventually, I'm certain you'll end up with a better car and better equipment.

Never stop.

sorry for your loss. did you also lose all your optics as well? I never let my gear out of my sight unless its locked up at home.

Terrible terrible. I drive a Chevy Silverado and it got broke into and about 6k worth of gear got stolen. The cop walked right up to the door and showed me the center punched out of my lock... he says, "Yup this happens ALL the time."

Low Life people. Oh well, as a society we allow them to exist so we gotta deal with them I guess. Sorry for your loss.
