As usual: Great work Miguel!
I rarely watch shorts, watched this one because of Mac and the F35 and forgot about it after the first minute.
It's strange that I could spend 15K on a working C300II (or more on a F55) and would still look at this footage and think:
This is how I want my footage to look.
(I spare the obvious, that Mac is such a talented guy and this was a solid production).

WOW! Amazing work! Thanks for posting this, it's great to see a thread on actual filmmaking these day's. I really loved the aesthetic, the gritty grain, and de saturated color works perfectly on this film. Not to mention the handheld work that pulls you into the scene. Inspiring none the less!

I agree with everyone, great work! so nice to see real filmmaking, you don't think about the camera while watching and this how it suppose to be.

but as we are still in a camera forum, would be good to know some tech details:
Lenses used?
Recorder used?
Steadicam used? (looks like real steadicam)
and lighting setup in the shop? did you use the available light mixed with some Kino's or small HMI's? or something else?

Thanks for sharing.

btw, Vimeo have changed the way you watch videos, you can't force 1080p HD anymore, so in the beginning it played 720p or something lower, because I know about this, I changed to 1080p and it worked fine (they claim they know best but they don't).

Loved the camera work although it may be a tad overly handheld after a while. The grade, lighting and composition work is just top level stuff!

The writing though, and I'm sorry to say it, but it was student-level and just too predictable and obvious overall, especially the last lines. I'd just cut that VO off at the end and let it be visual... it is more than enough as is. I did love the use of non-popular language though, very appropriate and not shy, which is great.

Watched on a large, high-grade plasma TV and would have guessed 35mm, and I am rarely fooled, even with "treated" Alexa footage. Other than some of that blown out sky, I'd even argue it was film! The F35, in good hands, is simply far above them all... never seen a Red touch this.

Lovely stuff, I think it all came together very nicely in terms pacing, tone, performance and the edit. The visuals were terrific as always.

My one quick question would be on the lighting Miguel, what did you do to balance the interior of the store so that the exteriors outside the window were kept from blowing out entirely?

Wow! Mac it looks super great. Look better than all hollywood movies made with red, F55, F65 and these cameras. Vince is right this looks like film. Story is also great. Is really real story? I love this short.

It looks great but I just can't stand the shaky hand held footage so didn't make it through. Will give it another chance when I have better connection also...

Downloaded the HQ off vimeo. Tight story. I tried to imagine how it could play out with no VO but I like how conscience and literal it is. Some gorgeous looking shots. The golden light on the dudes in the car at 2:37 is so money. Ultra warmth on darker complexions just look so nice. Nat coming through some diffusion? Would love to know how that was lit. I'd also love to know if the grain came out of the F35 or was some added? The vimeo encode actually preserves the grain well. Glad I own a set of the Sony CineAlta v2.0 primes because they are put to good use here. Long live handheld! I have grown so weary of overly refined and linear movement. Let it float.

Do I see steam coming out of dude's mouth at 6:26? Nice blood and fx.

Any optical diffusion? I'd love to see a little AC mag-esque write up from Mac on this one- some lighting breakdowns, production details, T-stops, etc.

Yes I also download and watch on TV. Crazy good and looks like film. Mac can do this without much budget and big hollywood movies with other cameras look crappy. Mac is super talent. F35 is super camera. Mac and F35 is perfect match.

Truly astonishing. The full cinema film experience in a world wide web filled with video clips.

Very well executed and it's hard to find a fault with it.

I agree it's a dead ringer for 35mm too. If you don't scrutinize it it's easy to mistake it for celluloid.

Job very well done for all involved. I watched it twice and I know I will again.

Very well shot, lovely aesthetic, great skill/talent/craft on display. And seeing a very good theme well acted is a joy to watch. Not sure if I like the VO approach or not yet. Still trying to let that one settle in my mind. I have a preference to let the actors and dialog and their choices tell us, but there's so much efficiency in the VO approach here that it's difficult to argue with it. If I had to cut out any line of VO at all it'd be the last one. It's already very clear from the visuals that the primary theme is right there. No need to bang it with the VO. Still, no complaints. Very solid stuff.

The grain was added. Quite a lot actually. Since the film is set in the 90s it did feel too clean .

I had forgotten but yes we shot with a Soft FX 1/4 on both cameras. Just to try something different and give it a bit of that 90s look. It's ok, not a fan of it, nothing really against it.

So you add diffusion and it still look so nice and sharp? I don't understand people saying F35 is not sharp enough. Crazy. I watched on my big TV and it's nice and sharp.
