Looks like things are looking up for us the pro users

The idea that Apple should or would discontinue their Mac Pro line is silly and a bad move if they did. But they do need to get their pro house in order. Too many people switching from FCP and not seeing the value in running a mac over a powerful PC. Wasn't that long ago when macs were the sought after platforms for video editing. Today it's harder to make that sale to the IT department who would rather set us up on pimped out Dells, much to my disappointment.

Great if it finally comes about. I'm still torn decision wise, I'm in the process of migrating from FCP to Premiere, and that basically ends the only reason I went Mac in the first place.

The only thing that really keeping the Mac alive for me as an option is the fact that my current Mac Pro is still going strong after 5 years - I never had a PC last that long.

and you probably never will....

5 years and counting, only upgraded the Gfx card and installed an SSD as a boot drive. Was about 700$ dollars cheaper than the cheapest mac pro at the time, And for editing and AE purposes marginally faster. And I'm not planning to upgrade for at least a year. (all files up to 1080p are no problem, .r3d is a bit out of reach for this system)

On topic; It's going to be interesting to see if the rumours about a stackable design are going to be true. And since they don't really have a server option any more, hot swappable hard drives would be nice too.

I've had many Windows towers last 5+ years, and my current Thinkpad X61 Tablet laptop (from 2007, and it wasn't even a powerhouse then) is still going strong and won't be replaced soon - it edits 1080 in Premiere CS5.5 wonderfully under Windows 7.

The current public perception of Windows and the machines it runs on is certainly outdated. Macs are not magic, despite what many seem to think - computers are computers.

It's not that particular mac pro that's lasted so long, it's recent computers in general: since the intel core2 generation, reasons to upgrade have been much milder, and lots of people are keeping their systems longer than they used to (in the Mac and PC camps). Right now my main 3 systems are a 6-years-old notebook, a 4-years-old workstation, and a 4-years-old HTPC. All windows. And I find no need to upgrade any of them (even the notebook: a 12" MSI weighting 1.8kg, with 4 hours of battery life; from 2006).

Yeah, I wonder whether that plays a bigger part in that. I was constantly upgrading my PCs until I got my first dual-dual-core machine with the Mac Pro; so I suppose they never lasted long enough performance-wise to fully test their longevity.

I just ordered a 2.5 GigHz 17 inch Macbook Pro. I value mobility more, so went for a Macbook Pro. Is it also going to be updated?

According to the MacRumors buyer's guide, the Macbook Pro is listed as a "don't buy - updates soon". And the worldwide developer's conference opens in less than 3 days, and that's a place where new product announcements are frequently made.

Learn to use computers. PC last always longer.

Awelgraven was being polite. That is a ridiculous statement. Please talk facts. Have used both for many years, and Mac computers hold their net worth longer. Just got to ebay, or Craigslist, and check the percentage of what they're listed as, against original price. No brainer. That being said, I wish Windows was as integrated with PC hardware...it would save me a good deal of money.

A... Mac computers hold their net worth longer. Just got to ebay, or Craigslist, and check the percentage of what they're listed as, against original price. .

Price is one thing. But that's not "lasting". A computer is outdated when the next hardware generation is available.
For a MacPro that was at least a year ago.

Can you just drop in the next best processor or any graphic card in your mac?
You're mostly stuck with what you have (yeah I know there are some exceptions).

You can always upgrade a PC over the years and stay on the bleeding edge instead of waiting
a few years, till Apple decides for you, when you can have a new generation machine.

So why would someone pay such a high price for a used out-of-date computer on Ebay?
Just because Mac users are happy with sub par performance for the buck?
Just because they are afraid or to lazy to learn they main tool inside out and build it to their needs?

It's an enigma to me.

The only point I could understand, is if someone wants FinalCut.

I've upgraded many MAC's. Processors, video cards... I've never run into a problem with any of my Macs. They work as well as the day you unboxed it. I bought a PC once that died in 2 weeks. Spent days trying to correct it's issues to no avail.

please lets not make this a mac vs pc thread, there are plenty already, me as a long time mac pros buyer, could not be more excited!!

i have never spotted a motherboard manufacturer using a time machine or anticipate the future. you can choose between low/mid/high end tier components every generation of computers with limited backward compatibility. that's it as far as "customization" goes. when its time to change something, it's time to get a new machine all together.

and computer software is supposed to get optimized every generation. like microsoft office, adobe photoshop or final cut. it's not supposed to be lazy-ly developed like premiere pro (just an example opposite to photoshop development) requiring more power to do the same tasks of previous version. sometimes almost doubling some of the system requirements. and inevitably lagging and becoming less responsive with every version.

No amount of computational power or speed would offset software optimization

You do know that Mac's use the exact same parts as PC's? My friend had iMac that died in 2 days. If you can't fix PC you can't fix Mac either. What was the reason your PC died? It's just sounds that you know very little about computers.

PC = Easily the most customizable, most powerful and most freedom.

It died because it was a POS store bought paper weight. I've built many PC's for myself and my friends. I'm a PC and Mac guy. I prefer Macs as they hold their value much longer. In every mass produced product, of course a few will die in 2 days like your friends. Here's the thing, I don't want to fix computers, I want them to work from the day I plug it in until the day I upgrade machines, and SO FAR, I've had the best success with APPLE!
MAC=just as customizable, expendable, same power, and just flippin looks better! Hell, Dell laptops still have that red nipple in the keyboard. Maybe it's the only nipple you guys get to touch. POW! Come on, I kid I kid.

Back on topic. I have a pretty well connected friend who says that we won't see a macpro announced. I hope he's wrong, but I have believe him judging by his status. We'll see, today is the big day for that news....

Hey, Derek7. Did you post your 5th post from your Iphone? LOL
