Looks all a bit soft to me.

I've been consistently amazed by how little research you've done on this equipment before using the gear in the first place (esp on a feature) and making sweeping

I just realize it in another thread...

Never the less it was the cause for an in depth explanation of the interaction between relays, GG's and 35mm lenses on the image...

And with due respect, of course your grabs would be sharper since you're shooting on a $30,000 camera, not necessarily because of the Letus.

Its visible an on camera sharpening the one that gives a ringing around highlights thats my feeling. Its better to leave camera sharpening to OFF and do it in post. The detail process in camera is a post process so its better to be done on the CC step. Some times if we put the detail to 0 is not OFF, i.e. on HVX200 it has to be -7 to be OFF.

These shoots are with a Sony PDW700 from Chris Albert... I thought the EX1/3 has the same resolution...

It was off. I set it to the lowest level possible on the camera as I'm aware of the additional noise that can be introduced even at the zero level.

The grab I posted was actually shot on an XH-A1, which is very sharp, but the EX1/EX3 is much sharper.

The detail issue is tricky. If you are doing your own post then it makes sense to leave it off. I am very rarely in that situation and usually working with people who don't pay nearly enough attention to color correction let alone detail levels so I generally give them the best image out of the box and that usually means raising my detail levels when using an adapter. i've been perfectly happy with those results but were the image to be blown up very large or transferred to film I might act differently.

Sop bottom line, the takes are okay. I just wonder how the side by side comparison with a DSLR would have looked.

"In all honesty Jacotte, You are incredibly fortunate that people on these boards are so generous with their knowledge that they still bother to help you out. I've been consistently amazed by how little research you've done on this equipment before using the gear in the first place (esp on a feature) and making sweeping, ill informed and often rude pronouncements on the value of it. "

Lenny Levy, I'm amazed at the arrogance of this statement. How is one supposed to know a wide open lens is soft unless the issue comes up spontaneously? I have seen countless posts by people discussing their wide open aperture and nobody ever brought up focus. Even here nobody brought up the subject until I actually posted images and the ground glass issue was discussed. As for my experience, believe me, after one year of Letus + EX1 I have enough experience to tell you I went so far as to take the Letus appart and put it back together and I brought the entire rig to Mali where we shot under adverse weather conditions (40 degrees celcius and plenty of dust) a musical with an army of extras. Prior to that I did other features on film and video. You should be lucky to have people like me around who actually use the stuff being discussed here for ambitious projects. Now please don't patronize me. I would not patronize you because I presume you have other experiences to contribute.

"You've been insulting this whole discussion group."

If you feel insulted by my posts, then you have a chip on your shoulder or you are simply posting this to dig for up some dirt. You have a problem, not me.

"Because of that I have no faith in how you set up your adapter, whether you were focusing properly, what kind of detail levels you use, what your f stops your backfocus settings etc.. I also don't have the patience to want to help out and answers questions that a more humble person might have figured out long ago or that I would have been to happy to help with. "

The one thing you admit is that you don't know anything about what I did. Faith is another issue. If you have no faith in me then I have no faith in you either but this is totally irrelevant in a forum discussion. I will answer your questions even if they seem silly to me. Obviously you know it all and we're not worthy.

"You're questions indicate that you still don't know very much about these things. Try searching through old discussions."

You post indicates you have nothing to say but to be pretentious. Try to post something useful and productive next time. :violin:

Jacotte,

People are on here to help you, try and make use of it. Lenny has been especially helpful to novices over the years, his reply to you is simply in response to your own attitude. You may or may not realize it, but you come across as very rude and confronting to the very people that are trying to help you.

You are asking questions in order to learn and this is certainly the best place to ask them, I would just suggest taking a little more respect and consideration to how you reply to people and you will most likely get a lot more out of it. I am by no means having a go at you, I am simply trying to help you my friend.

It takes two parties to be annoying.

If this guy annoys you/us, then stop responding to his posts. He is trolling, quite successfully I might add. He's done this under at least two screen names and everyone knows it yet we/they continue to respond.

I maintain that it is us that has the problem. We are not learning from our interactions with jujufactory.

Exactly, frankly I'm done responding to jacotte's post in any shape or form. Every single questions that he's asked so far can be found by doing simple searches and have been discussed ad nauseum over the years. Things like lens performances at specific f-stops, backfocus and the need for an HD monitor are very basic information that are included in at least several stickies. I'm amazed that he's been allowed to stick around for as long as he has with the kind of attitude he's been displaying.

wide open lens aperture is soft and has been since the dawn of time. I think it might actually be the oldest optical truth of all.

Promises, promises. Anybody else want to go for dig before a moderator intervenes? These unproductive and repetitive off topic posts are getting to be a tradition around here. Who's next? Krummi, you want to give it another go? Gentlemen the thread is still open. Now is a good time to go for that last dig. :)

Ouch. The XL1 has grain. Do you have a day shot?

What is the average estimated resolution of 16mm film?
