Hey guys, I am new here, kinda new to videomaking as well. been using a Canon HG20 for a couple years now.
I am looking to get a sony advance camcorder. (NOT a handycam) or a DSLR that shoots video well.
I have my eye on the Sony NEX VG10, i hear good and bad things and now im a bit hesitant.
i went to the sony store and tried it out and it looks cool and great to use.

anyone recommend a SONY Camera that is 2000 or less and is for an intermediate videographer like myself.

thanks
Sam

the best sony for under $4K are the nex-5N and the nex-7
unless you definitely need the videocamera form factor, then VG-20
but if you can live with the shape and physical restrictions of a stills camera, 5N or 7

Do you in need of a interchangeable lens camera? because the Canon XA10 is a great little camera to look.

The other big question is do you need a shallow DoF like a S35 chip provides, or is 1/2" chip set or smaller OK with you?

BTW - I just ordered a VG20. Simply put, no other true video camera has interchangable lenses plus S35 chip set for less then $3,500 right now.

Plus, it has crazy long battery life - I HATE changing batteries.

i went and played with the VG20 today at the sony store. with a 18 -200 lens that it comes with for 2200. its awesome. let me know how it works for you jdv.

i dont need interchangeable lenses but it seems like a nice option. i am used to fixed lenses. and yes i would like a shallow DOF for a change

I have owed both the VG10 and now the VG20. They are both great cameras. Not sure why they seem to get a bum wrap on the internet but I REALLY love them. VG10 had a bit of a learning curve as you have to learn it to really get good results. first couple of months was a lot of trial and error and then it was great after that. Now the VG20 just made it alot better. If you budget can get the 20 then that is the way to go. If funds are a concern you can get some decent deals out there on the VG10.

(RE: GX1: I'd rather go for a nex-5n myself, and in any case he specifically said he wanted a sony recommendation)
