Looking to buy new...

I have the sanford and davis...and its works well for what i need. The head is quite smoothe. I dont need the 2 handles so i take one off. Only wish the lowest level was lower so i could get lower shots.

I have had the Davis and Sanford for about a year now, and it has been pretty good up until recently. The level spreader (non-removable) recently snapped off by itself. I am always extremely careful with it, so it just goes to show how you can't always bargain for good quality. Other than that though, the head is pretty smooth, and the legs are fairly sturdy. They wobble quite a bit but that is to be expected. I might recommend going for a Manfrotto set instead. They have removable spreaders, so you can go pretty low.

I like the look of the VariZoom a lot, so I would go for that vs. the D&S.

Thanks for the comment, seems to be a very common tripod with general reviews. Did you use that tripod for your Rally Car vid??

Thanks Andy! Yeah I was refereed (uncle @ Sammys Cam) to the Varizoom but wouldn't find a good review on it. There was one negative review on DVXuser and only two reviews on B&H compared to 100+ of the D&S. I think im going to give the Varizoom a shot and hope for the best!

ps. How did mammoth go?

same thing happened to my Davis & Sanford after a year. I shipped it back to them via the ten year warranty and they shipped me a new one. No problems at all. Its a good tripod for the money.

Ah a 10yr warranty! The varizoom is only 1 Year Warranty! That sounds pretty good...

+the D&S comes with W3 Universal Folding Doll.. don't know how much I would use it though...

Tough Decision once again...

yeh the D&S has a 10 year warrenty and i;ve read some comments of people that had to send back stuff and there was no prob at all. the company just sent the part. However for me it isnt so easy cuz i live in Jamaica and between shipping and customs i may as well buy a new part.

I didnt use the tripod for the Rally vid...that was all handheld. In that situation i found that a tripod slowed me down...had to get those shots fast...so set up and adjusting a tripod would have made me miss quite a few shots.

yeah I guess they are quite cheap then, I mean good for the price, but I think the varizoom might be a better buy. I hate the hassle of dealing with RMA's and shipping...it gets annoying... I do it enough with computer parts already

Ps. those were some great shots for handheld

I notice that the Varizoom only has a max height of 48" versus the D&S having a max height of 64" (with extension tube). The Varizoom can go 6" lower, but I don't know if I could deal with 48" as a max height. That is 4 feet, below eye level (normally). I am looking around for tripods also and might just get the D&S one. Thanks for the links.

Thank you for spotting the max hight! I'm at 6ft and I cant think of a time I have shot with a tripod near my stomach... hmmm 4ft vs 4.75ft

OK! Update on the Varizoom height. There was a problem with the heigth of the first generation model but Varizoom corrected this and there second generation model fixed this. IDK what generation B&H has but Sammy's camera (LA Area) has the later...
