Hello, I'm looking to buy an fs700 but was wondering if its the best time to get one. The camera has been out for over a year and as far as I know has stayed roughly the same price. So what I want to know is can I expect a price drop any time soon?
I know it can be pretty hard to tell unless theres been some news about it, but maybe either by looking at past trends or newer models yet to come out, you could possibly predict if the price will go down.
I can wait a few months but if theres going to be no changes anytime soon may aswell take the plunge now.

Also has anyone used the camera for any green screen work? If so could you let me know if its any good and whether you can do it at a higher frame rate aswell

Thanks guys!

(ps if anyones willing to sell thiers please do get in contact!)

Hi,

I can't say anything about the price. I guess a lot of new cameras will be presented at NAB this year, but it's a couple of months until then. If you're living in Europe you should bear in mind the Sony Prime Support is awful (based in the London area, in the UK). Hopefully you won't have to deal with them. I've used the camera for green screen work with the internal codec in the slow motion mode. Here's an example:

Manchester .. ? So you are in Europe ? :) don't know about price for FS700 there, but in B&H camera actually much cheaper: I've got mine about 1 year ago for $8600 ( + tax ) with stanard kit lens 18-200.. ( it's NOT a POWER zoom lens.. )
and I pay $425 for 4K UPDATE in Sony Service Center in New Jersey.. so it's about $9025 for me without other stuff.. Today I can buy Sony NEX-FS700RH - with 18-200 POWER ZOOM lens and ready 4K RAW option for only $8300 so.. maybe $725 is not a big deal.. :) but power zoom is much better, as I try it and like how it work, when needed !.. so if I gonna get this now, I will need to spend another $1200 for it !!!
... if you want me to help you to get it - contact me any time in Skype - sergesmart :)

thanks fr the reply guys

thanks for the info, the video looks great well done! what frame rate did you shoot at? looks abot 60fps if I had to guess. In your opion do you think shooting at 240fps (?); so its still at full HD, will have no effect on green screen work?

I would not recommend using the fs700 internal recording for greenscreen, specially the slowmo (120-240fps) you get is pretty low-res (marketingpixels).
With the O7q you get the same resolution/quality as recording with 24fps DNG! that makes the camera much more usefull for greenscreen work.

I still like my FS700 very much but NXCAM, this prosumer camcorder series will be done deal, that's my guess. Sony definitely push XAVC and NXCAM is not suitable as long as the series keep using legacy AVCHD.

you don't need to wait another FS whatever hundred, i think there is no new brother coming up. so if you really like to get one set, just get it now.

I would wait for the FS800 and just look into something like this. Still sony and dont get me wrong but I love my FS700. I think this year might be the year of 4K camera. http://nofilmschool.com/2014/01/son...pha-a5000-hdr-as100v-pov-action-cam/#comments

Just my 2 cents. Just hold of on it little longer.

Ah, well the FS800 seems to be quite high resolution but i'm not sure what the picture quality would be like and the form factor really sucks.

Thanks! We shot at 25 fps, 50 fps and 200 fps. For green screen work it's important to get the lighting correct.

If Sony would release an FS800/FS700mkII or something, what changes do you think they would do? And when do you think that would be?
The FS700R/H was relesed just this fall, so let's say they'd introduce a real update at NAB, then it would be available august/september at the earliest, don't you think?
And if they improved codecs etc too much, it would be too much of a competitor to the F5/F55s, so what's left for Sony to do with the FS700 or any other in this price segment?

As you can guess I'm also looking to get the FS700R in the next few weeks, and my only real concern is that it's been out a while now... On the other hand, for my needs there's no competition at it's price point right now and I need to get one now-ish.

Everything that "improves" the FS700 will get the successor close to the F5 maybe too close.
The release of the FS100 and the FS700 was not expected in up front - it's wild guess as always ;-)

Clermond is right, when I was looking to to get the camera. I was looking at Mark3, BMC, FS100....then the FS700 came out of nowhere. I bought it straight away. Like I said a thousand time I love my FS700. I just think if you hang in there a little longer...something better will come along. Atleast being able to record 4K without having to buy an external recorder. Sony hit the jacket pot with the FS700 and then the F5 was also a hit...but lets not forget you got the GH4-4K for around $2000 coming in about 3 to 4 months...forget BMC4K cause by the time their release it...it will be 2016...joking. You think Canon or Sony is gonna let Panasonic take away the 4K hype that is gonna flood the market this year. You got NAB coming up. I would think carefully before you say the FS700 is the one for me. You ask our advise and this is my advise. Everyone has a difference view when it come to a camera of their choice. I just dont want you to buy it then 6 months later Sony or Canon etc announce something that would make the FS700 drop in value.

I guess the better question is... what does the FS700 NOT have that you want? It is inevitable- a bigger better camera will get released sometime in the near future by someone... but are you losing work NOW because your current setup isn't cutting it for your or your client's needs? Is the FS700 the perfect cam for me? No- in fact there is no "perfect" cam for me in the price range I want. But for everything we are currently doing (and have been doing for the past year and a half) the 700 has been a phenomenal camera. There will always be a new camera on the horizon. If you need a new cam now- get the FS700 (or whatever currentcam you decide) and let it make some $$$ for you. When the new camera comes out that you cant live without you can always sell and think of the $1K-$2K depreciation as a 6 month rental fee. But then you will hear about the next big thing that's coming and then where are you? There are a ton of great cameras out there and even better one's coming... I got caught up in this camera envy for years, but the FS700 is the first cam I've owned in 15 years that has made me satisfied to where I don't want to upgrade after a year and a half. Now I just invest in better camera support gear... that can be used camera agnostic.

Aside from the detail the latitude is what really has impressed me about this cam. I just returned from shooting the Grand Canyon in bright sunlight. In post I was amazed at how well it held the highlights yet retained a lot of shadow detail with a minimal amount of noise. That's a lot to ask of a digital camera even in this day and age.

Well, I've come across a chunk of cash and now is my only chance to take a step up from my EA50. I know that there's new cameras coming out all the time (same as with computer). But I also know that the FS700 has been out a while and it would abviously suck if a new version was released a couple of months after I get it. As the FS700R and RH versions were released just recently, I personally don't think there will be a significant upgrade until the fall though. Also, as significant improvements are made it will make it too close to a F5 which leaves the options that it will either be a new version with not that many upgrades (maybe that was already the 700R) or that it will still be quite some time until it is released, closer to when the F5/F55 lines are updated.
As for things the FS700 don't have that I want is 10bit 422. That will be amendable with a 7Q down the road though (if I'll ever be able to afford one).

I'm pretty set on getting the FS700R but, for me, this might be the single most expensive thing I've ever bought so it's not exactly pocket change to me, so I'm trying to make sure I don't do anything stupid ;)
As I have a very irregular income, I never buy things using loans or monthly payments, only when I can pay them at full at once. And it's very rare for me to have this amount of money at the same time :)
