hey all,
looking to purchase a new editing rig that will be used for sony vegas 10 + canon 60D files. came across this one on tigerdirect and am wondering what you all think (in regards to if this would be sufficient for what I'll be using it for). I have an nvidia geforce 8800 gts 512mb that I could pop in here. been out of the computer building game for a while now so I don't know if it's the best card for what I need it for.

any thoughts? or recommendations on other editing rigs you'd think would work well for me?

That graphics card is pretty lacking these days. I dont know how Vegas handles hardware acceleration but i know for Adobe that card is going to leave you wanting. The rest of the rig isnt bad if thats all your budget can afford. The Motherboard will support the amd Thuban chips (the newer 6 core) which I am running with great success. It will however only hold 2 sticks of ram so you will have to buy 8gb sticks to upgrade in the future which will cost you more than if it could hold 4 sticks like most MoBos.

how much ram would you recommend running on an editing rig? 8gb? and what cpu? would a quad-core be sufficient or would you recommend a 6-core?

$300 i7 quad is good enough
either 6gb or 12gb ram (remember, triple channel now)
$150-$200 1gb+ graphics card should suffice, ATI's are a lil more powerful then nvidia in this price range
3tb mirrored or raid hard disks for storage
128gb ssd for boot

BTW, this thread should go in the Hardware forum.

I have an i7 2.6 ghz quad core and 12 gb of ram and i can have after effects and adobe premiere running simultaneously with no problem and no lagging. I also have an ati 4870 x2 2gb graphics card which i find really good to. This is all used for gh2 and gh1 editing and it edits flawlessly.

I love my 6 core AMD chip, i have 8gb of ram and its OK but not great. 16gb would be ideal for me. For AMD it doesnt handle triple channel like the intel chips so you pair them rather than tripple. If your editing in Adobe software i would highly recommend nVidia cards. If your not running adobe stuff then ATI is a bit more bang for your buck in my experience.

If you want to buy right now, you should get a i7 2600k no doubt. It is pretty much the fastest CPU right now. Check out these parts

The total comes out to be $920.91

This is a killer rig, and would beat anything else anyone posted. (Although you could add and SSD and Raid like Efexone suggested.)

Also, that rig on tigerdirect really isn't very powerful. The CPU is quite old, and AMD's triple cores hardly match an Intel dual core at best.
