...but I know some people who have bought cheapie miniDV camcorders that they use solely for capturing. Would this be a reasonable option for a new editor?

Is there anything I should look out for if I did go this route?

Thanks!

DVRack has been bought out by Adobe! I have DVRack on my lappy which I occasionaly use for direct capture if bringing the laptop to the shoot is feasible. The benefit is no tape dropouts since I have two immediate copies, one in-camera and one on hardrive. DVRack is a great learning tool for someone new to video as to analysis of your video and audio at the scene, or in your quiet quarters when shooting test patterns. If your not sold on P2, DVRack hd is a great runner up!

oops i just noticed we're in the marketplace?

you sure can use a mini dv cam... it's probably the cheapest way to capture from tape to hard drive... dv-rack is cool if you do alot of stationary tripod work... it helps you achieve the best from your camera in different environments and has alot of cool features... it's almost like turning your computer into a big P2 card with a monitor... but it's no good for doc shoots because you always have to be firewired in to your computer.
