Looking for used lighting equipment

Anyone know a good place to find used lighting equipment? I know of pyramid-films.com but that's the best I've found so far.

Re: Looking for used lighting equipment

its kinda hard.. since most lights you would want to buy (like ARRI's etc) last for a good 30 years and usually people dont wanna get rid of them.

If you find a good place, let me know.

Re: Looking for used lighting equipment

Lots of good lights show up on ebay all the time. C-stands are fairly rare, but light heads show up. Two sellers I've had good luck with are pyramid-films and llight40. llight40 is a working Gaffer with his own truck, and the things I've bought off him are top-notch and well-maintained.

Re: Looking for used lighting equipment

Thanks for the info. Pyramid had a deal with C-stands, 2 for $150 which included heads and arms. Not sure if they're still doing it. The C-stands that Amvona sells are pretty decent (I got one for $35) but you have to find the head and arm for it.

You will find some stuff on Ebay...I keep getting outbidded on the lights that I want though!

I know the feeling. Even worse, I keep putting stuff on my watch list and forgetting to bid on it :(

The secret to winning on ebay is...

... you have to be willing to pay more than anyone else in the entire world. ;D

Yeah, the thing I've discovered about Ebay is that for every person out there willing to sell you something for a song, there's ten people willing to pay the moon for it. I was bidding on a second hand Glidecam and dropped out of the running when the price got high enough that I could buy it brand new from B&H :)

Re: Looking for used lighting equipment

Bidding can get crazy, but it's also possible to get incredible deals. Seriously, although you do have to pay more than anyone else in order to win, the trick is to never bid until the very last second. Newbie bidders will get caught up in "auction fever" and keep trying to outbid you, but if you don't place your bid until three seconds to go, they won't have a chance to react.

Also helps you keep your own "auction fever" under control: if you make a decision in your mind as to what you're willing to pay, and then you bid that amount, you'll either win or you won't -- and you have to be okay with that. No chance to go in and bid higher and higher, because you'll run out of time. So wait until the last second, place your highest bid, and walk away -- you'll either win or you won't, but either way you won't have paid more than you intended.

Re: Looking for used lighting equipment

Yep I learned that lesson a long time ago...waiting to the end to bid that is. The crazy thing is that the auction could end at like 4am and someone will still mess around and outbid you because its not 4am all over the world!

When products get to high I usually drop out or dont bid at all. Point in case just last week a Sennheiser ME66/K6 went for $396 plus shipping on there. You can buy it brand new for about $379-399.

Re: Looking for used lighting equipment

There is a great sniper program you can get on cnet.com (downloads) called Auction Sentry. It is free to try for 10 days and then it costs like $15 or so. You can tell it what item you want to bid on and the max you will pay and then it will bid on it (snipe) with seconds remaining. This also prevents you from changing your mind at the last moment to bid more. Also, it will alert you if the price has gone beyond what you would bid so you can either change it or just let it pass by. You should at least try it free for 10 days!

This sounds like just the thing for me! I try to be a bid sniper but I tend to fall asleep at the wheel and forget to bid on time. Unfortunately I have the attention span of a flea. Er... sorry, what were we talking about? :)

Re: Looking for used lighting equipment

I don't know about those sniping programs... I tend to be quite guarded about my ebay identity and password. handing that stuff over to a program (especially an internet-aware program) seems like an open invitation to identity theft. I'm not saying any of those programs do that, but I just never felt comfortable taking the chance...

Re: Looking for used lighting equipment

Woo hoo! I just won a light on Ebay. It was a tight race. Right down to the finish. But I sniped that sucker with mere seconds to spare!! :)

Re: Looking for used lighting equipment

Yahoo! Ebay success stories abound! I feel like we should start a support group :)

The only way I feel I've won something is if someone gives it to me.....for free!       8)

Re: Looking for used lighting equipment
