looking for opinions on reel...

Hey guys, I'm relatively new to the board, so figure i'd make an introduction. My name is Sean Porter, I've been a cinematographer here in seattle for quite some time working both on commercial productions as well as independent films shot on the westcoast. my most recent work has all been shot (uncorrected) via the panasonic DVX - so it may be of some relevance to the board. Anyway - please offer any and all comments.

Re: looking for opinions on reel...

Hey sporter, welcome. Your reel looks great. I especially like how you exposed the shots, no blown out highlights and a very dark and gritty feel. Nothing looks worse on DV than overexposure. YOur compositions were excellent, I especially like the girl on the back of the guy on a motorcycle, and the way that you composed the opening of that shot. I was just in Seattle yesterday shooting a few shots for an upcoming short that I have going. Keep up the good work.

Re: looking for opinions on reel...

i really liked your reel, had some great shots that really made me think. Was that all DVX or film too? i the shots of the races cars at the end where it cranes up is awesome. Same with the couple goign through that tunnel. I would love to know how you got that shot.

Re: looking for opinions on reel...

Some really good shots in your reel Sean. I liked the camera on the black car and the motocycle one is really nice, hope to see some more soon.

Re: looking for opinions on reel...

Yes, a very nice reel indeed.

Was that score a piece of your own? It was really great, as well.

Re: looking for opinions on reel...

All of it looked fantastic. Especially the one with the girl on the back of the bike. Very surreal. Loved it.

Re: looking for opinions on reel...

Way kool reel, Sean. You maybe got room for an apprentice, si? ;)

Re: looking for opinions on reel...

Thank you all for the kind words. This is a pretty condensed sample of my work, all pieces shot with the DVX and completed in the last six months. I try to live by the now-aging philosophy "if it can be done in-camera, do it." Something about the tangibility of filmmaking seems to be fading behind software advances. I still like to get my hands a little dirty. Working in seattle has been both inspiring and disenchanting, though its nice when you can steal shots through downtown at 4am w/o a permit =) I wish the score was original, but its a piece by Miranda Sex Gardens. I am trying to get out of video in escape of electronic politics and feature creep and move to 16mm. However I know it will be a long road, so I just do what I can. Again, thank you all for your feedback, I really appreciate it.

Re: looking for opinions on reel...

Just have to pipe in and add to the comments already posted. Loved your reel...professional looking, especially considering that most of the picture was done in-camera w/o the use of software to assist.

Loved the girl on back of motorcycle shot. Sweeeet.

Re: looking for opinions on reel...

Sean, you've got some nice things there. Here's a couple of things I observed.

Looks like in one of your shots you've got your french flags in the frame. I would absolutely remove this by stretching the footage until it disappears (use Photozoom Pro so you don't compromise the quality of your shot).

Some of your shots are pretty repetitive, good as they are, you suggested you have quite a bit of footage, you might want to include a little more variety. You have a lot of car shots in this reel.

I like the surreal aspect of the music, it's different than the usually fast and choppy editing associated with many reels.

You've obviously got a lot of talent and I feel with a little more work on this reel, regarding variety, you'll have something very solid on your hands.

Good work.

Re: looking for opinions on reel...

Definitely a sweet DVX reel; the mood and overall tone of the montage was set up nicely. Gotta love the Lincoln Continental!

yeah definately.  Thanks for the feedback.  I do realize I have alot of auto-related material in there, really just happenstance with my subject matter.  I have quite an extreme range of material I've compiled over the years, but all this stuff kinda "fit" together.  I will definately fix the french flag problem - haha one of those little reminders that nothing is perfect I suppose.  I'll dig around and if anything offer some more material for critique.  And since I'm relatively new to the board, if anyone is ever in the seattle area and wants to grab a few beers ring me up!

thanks guys, look forward to the future.

Re: looking for opinions on reel...

There were some very awesome shots in there. The score matched the visuals perfectly.

Re: looking for opinions on reel...

The shots of the girl and guy on the motorcycle at the end of the clip are exceptional art.

You know your stuff. I ditto what everyone else is saying, except to state that I found the images too soft for my taste... I kept wanting to rub my eyes or something.
