looking for high quality but small audio recorder

Thankyou for doing that test The Dingo - much appreciated
Sounds pretty good - am wondering why I am getting distortion on anything above the 1st pot level on the mix pre-d. Interestingly enough the tone does not distort on my recordings and as you say comes out at about -7db

The only differences from my set up to yours is that my attenuator states 600 ohms - yours is 150 ohms.
Also I am using a Hosa xlrf to right angle 3.5mm TRS product code XVS-101F
which is stereo -could that also be a problem?

Although it is a mess of cables and adaptors - if using line in can get me better quality than using the mix pre-d's specific mic out cable then its something I am willing to do for particularly static projects

That's the cable I could not find. I normally use a passive BeachTek DXA-2s adapter that sits under the camera. I doubt that the Hosa cable would be the problem.

Do you own an external audio recorder that you can plug your HOSA cable into? ( just to see if you get better results with an audio recorder )

Ok, connected my Zoom H1 line in with same configuration, and with the pad am able to record upto about 12 oclock on the mix pre-d pots before its getting too hot - much better than the gh3
zoom H1 line in without the pad is a hotter signal as to be expected, so the pad is definitely doing something when connected to the zoom

I dont have another pad to try without buying one, thats why Im wondering if seeking 150 ohm instead of the 600 ohm i have will solve it - I don't really understand what that actually means in practical terms in this scenario.

Record the MixPre-D test-tone with your Zoom H1 with and without the 20 dB pad, then see how much the signal level changes in your audio editor when the pad is added. This should give you an accurate idea of how much the pad is cutting your signal. ( last time I checked my 20 dB pad, it was showing a 19.2 dB change when I measured it this way )

managed to get hold of sony pcm-m10 to test as well - with the mix pre-d test tone
Zoom H1 with pad -5.47 on left channel, -12 on right (not sure why they're different?)
Zoom no pad -4.01 left & right
Sony pcm-m10 with pad -17.62
Sony no pad -15.62

seems the pad is only reducing by 2db, again I wonder if that is the 600 ohm discrepancy or is the pad faulty in some way

I'm sure someone else can do the maths on impedance of pads, but, just for reference, I have found a cheapo 600 ohm -15db pad in my bag which I have just tested, like you, into an M10: it gives -11db attenuation. Cheers, Roland
