Looking for Editor in Los Angeles Area

It looks like I will be parting ways with my editor for many reasons, some his, some mine, and what I really want to find is a freelance editor who does this type of work for a living, rather than someone who works 40 hours a week plus edits on the side. There are projects I'll have that will require me being able to work with an editor for long stretches of time, like this past June when we worked the entire month.

I am a director-producer doing a variety of types of work, but right now more aggressively pursuing corporate and commercial work because that's where the money is at this level. I also have several music videos I want to shoot in the coming months. I think I'm a cool guy and easy to work with, I try to be a really cool employer and take people to lunch, work around their schedules, help them out in whatever ways I can, etc., but I don't want that to be taken advantage of as I think it has been in the past. I want to find someone who respects me for what I do, as I respect them for what they do! I hope that is reasonable.

I live in downtown Los Angeles, near Staples, so somewhat centrally located. Another point I want to emphasize is that I want someone who wants to be part of my business, who wants to be put in a position where there is opportunity for growth but isn't ok with just the bare minimum. In other words, I don't want to work with someone who considers 8 hour days to be full days. This is the film industry. That kind of thing just doesn't work out here. I need someone who, if the pay is right anyway, will work as hard as we need to work to get the project done. I want someone who takes ownership of what they do, because I trust my editor (and my cinematographer, etc.) a lot, so I need to know they really care about their work and have high quality standards. I'm not a morning person either, so if your ideal work schedule is 9 to 5 when we're editing, I don't see that working out. First off, you don't want to drive downtown at 9 a.m., trust me, nor do you want to leave at 5 p.m. Second, I just don't work well at 9 a.m., maybe you don't either, then we could get along great!

Now I want to give you some information about the work environment. I moved from my office in Burbank to using my condo in downtown for home-office use because it saves money and because I think it's just a lot more comfortable. I always have drinks available, snacks, comfortable seating, a secure, quiet environment where we can blast the sound if we need to (2' thick concrete walls, etc.). I'm really cool with making sure my editor has what he / she needs in terms of software and hardware, so if you tell me we need something I usually trust that you are being honest with me.

My equipment is state-of-the-art. We have two MacBook Pros for backup, one is early 2008, one is summer 2007, so in case we need to use those machines they are there, or in case you have work you want to do at home as well. The main setup on my desk is pretty killer -- Mac Pro 3.2 Ghz 8-core with 10 gigs of RAM, NVIDIA GeForce 8800 graphics card, an AJA Kona 3 card, a CalDigit HDOne 2 terabyte RAID unit, a 17" HD/SD Panasonic pro reference monitor (used on set as well), a 28" Hanns-G monitor, and next to that a 20" Mac monitor. I also have a disk publisher (Primera Bravo II) and a high-end color printer, the Epson 3800. For software I have a bit of everything, Final Cut Studio 2, Adobe CS3, Lightroom, Final Draft 7, Storyboard Artist, 3 sound FX libraries from Digital Juice, 2 stock footage libraries, 3 music libraries, and a few expansions to Garage Band. Plus I have a few G-Drive 500 gig hard drives, a bunch of Western Digital 500s, so plenty of hard drive space (the computer has a 320 for its primary software, a 1 TB, and two 750s). I would say this is about as good of a setup as you'll see overall especially from a small production company.

If you have additional skills it's going to be a much better potential business relationship because in a way, what I'm really looking for is not just an editor but a right-hand man, someone I can trust and give opportunities to in the future. So if you have Web skills, that's excellent and can make you some extra money as well because some of the corporate work we'll be doing will have a Web component and that means I don't have to contract that out separately. If you enjoy being on set sometimes, or have other skills on set, I can always have you there to help me out in some capacity.

So send me a resume and reel and let's figure something out! My e-mail is jonathan@shutzi.com.
