FS7: Looking for a sturdy & motorised slider for fully equipped FS7

Hello

After quite a few research, I'm still not sure which slider I should go for. I'm mainly using i for fiction work or interview.

I would like a very sturdy, load capable, motorised slider to shoot with the FS7 w/Dock and RAw recording, lens, mattebox and monitor.
Size is not a problem, I do not intend to backpack it, and I have no problem to travel heavy.

I looked at DANA dolly, but to my knoledge they do not propose it with motorisation.
I saw the edelkrone sliderpro Xlarge, but would it be sturdy enough when all the weight is on the far right or left ? Also, the motor are LOUD !
I saw sliderkamera Xslider, but Im not sure it would fit the bill (vertical motor power is 4kg load only).

Is there a bigger boy out there, without having to spend 5000 for the atlas ?

Thank you

The next version of this one is getting machined next week. (small 5 pc batch- also with new knock down end rails) It'll go on Kickstarter as soon as I have the batch anodized. No motor yet, but that is planned as I've needed it many times. May likely adapt another MoCo system- electronics is not my strength. Pls excuse the length and wordiness, the Kickster video will be under 3 minutes.

In case you're wondering, I weigh 185 lbs.

I own the edelkrone pro xlarge. It is not sturdy enough for my FS7 and I don't have the extension unit, it bends horribly. It's nice for the A7 but nothing bigger.
I recently stumbled upon the Trost sliders which can be equipped with the motors from Dito Gear, this seems to be a serious slider. Check out this review https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_p5RjwggRgY

My rigged FS7 at 5kg works fine on a edelkrone Slider Plus Pro Large. At least when I use it on my Sachtler ENG2 CF HD tripod. On the other hand a conventional slider like my Slidekamera HSK-5 gives me more confident.

What is your total camera payload weight with all the goodies? Is it over 10 pounds?

I have the Dana Dolly with the (rolling) light stands they recommend. I have 5 feet, 10 feet, and 20 feet aluminum pipes to roll on. Needless to say, this is a different beast than your ordinary slider. Due to the weight of the Dolly plus your camera and monitor, being motorized might be less important. Just a thought.

Depends on why he wants motorization. If it's to automate a secondary camera that therefore doesn't require a separate operator, then the weight and sturdiness doesn't make a difference.

Personally I have a customized Matthews DC Slider and Kessler Second Shooter rig with both the basic Second Shooter looping functionality, as well as a wireless xbox controller for live moves. In theory the Second Shooter can do tilt up to 10 pounds, but I'm been happier with the results at 7 pounds or less of camera payload.

Mind you, my rig isn't available on the open market (customized), and it would set you back more than $5k anyway.

One note for the Dana Dolly - you can modify it to run a drive cable from end to end, and attach something like the Kessler shuttle pod motor configuration. I did so in the past, it wasn't expensive either - just some home depot clamps and blocks of wood.

This is straight up the most impressive DIY piece of kit I've ever seen. Thanks so much for sharing this. When I need a heavy-duty slider, you'll be the one that I get in touch with!

For everyone else's benefit, Karl's site (with a nice blog too) is here: http://www.karlkimdp.com/blog/

Thanks Jason- but maybe you were referring to this link? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=70SXO_ftzzE
Just going by the context of your post.
A new spider style hi-hat/rigging base for Mitchell/150mm/100mm heads is also being machined within the next two weeks.

Hello and thank you for all your responses.

The need for motorisation is mainly for VFX purpose : shootting plates with a motion. I'm also wondering if some slider motorising apparatus actually trigger the rec from the camera, because it could create issues not to, right ?

Weight of the rig : I'd say somewhere between 6 to 7 kg, so 12 to 14 pounds. (It is a FS7, lens, fs7 viewfinder, grip remote control, raw module, vmount battery, wireless hdmi, wireless follow focus...). Without raw, I'd say a good 5kg.

Hey Karl,

Just wanted to add an extra pointer to your great blog (as you'd already posted the youtube link).

Hope you don't mind. Nice showreel BTW. Gissa shout if you ever need help this (euro) side of the pond... :-)

Hi all, i don't know if you've come to a conclusion but here are my thoughts:

I have a second shooter plus system with a stealth 40" slider and i've recently used with an Fs5 in bridgemode, controlling pan, tilt, slide and focus with the kessler own fiz motor.

I think you can confidently use it with the fs7, keep in mind that it may be not so precise at pixel to pixel level, and that you may want to strip down the camera and remove grips, handles, viewfinder (or relocate the battery and monitor to shove off some weight on the tilt axis using something like the following link).

http://store.kesslercrane.com/products/mounting-grip/magnalink-rod-adapter.html

In this way I was able to put the Vlock + battery pinch on the tripod, and run 4 DTap cables (camera + shogun + 2controllers) for the whole shoot with just one battery.

In this way you can get a lighter and relatively affordable system, and adaptable if you want to go dolly with their dolly system.

If you want higher payloads the only way is cinedrive :)

Here's a quick review of the Second Shooter
