Hello everyone,

I'm making a film in baltimore and we want to get a shot where we have the camera hanging off the side of a passenger door of a moving car. This is the perspective we want...

We're looking for a dolly or some kind of equipment that will be able to hold the camera in this position and keep it sturdy. I'm in the Washington, D.C area. Can anyone help me?

Thanks,

Anthony

Re: Looking for a dolly

Yikes. Of the many things I wouldn't do in baltimore, hanging a camera off the side of a car whilst driving almost anywhere in Baltimore city ranks somewhere neer the top.

I'm in the DC area, and I'd help if I could, but I have no solution available for your situation.

Good luck on your shoot.

I'm from DC too (Go 'Skins ;D)

I don't know what your budget is like, but Filmtools has a big selection of different car mounts that I'm sure could be used for what you want to achieve. I've never used any of then myself, but I hear good things about them. Hope that helps,

Call Serious grip -they can help you. It isn't anymore dangerous to shoot in baltimore than any other big city. Just use common sense and don't do anything foolish. Afterall, we have had severral series shot here as well as ongoing feature work.

A dolly probably isn't what you're looking for. Ask about "car mounts" when you're asking around town, etc.

Re: Looking for a dolly

I agree that a dolly is certainly out of the question UNLESS your are going about 5mph. If you don't want to get a camera rig that would attach to the car then you might have to do a little "Macgyver"! Go to the hardware store and buy a garden hoe. Make sure the hoe part is of good size. Mount the camera to the bottom of the hoe. Once you have the settings and the depth of field the way you want it. Wrap the camera with a towel then gaffer tape or use bungi cables and securely mount the camera to the hoe. I say use a towel because you don't want that gaffer tape gook all over your camera! Find someone with a pickup truck and drive next to the "talent" car. The bottom of the hoe acts as a platform for the camera. You would be able to get some really cool shots . Not sure how sturdy and rock solid of a shot it will end up being but it would a cool shot for sure.

I learned this trick from a guy at my job that was doing a feature piece on women that ride motorcycles. He was able to get some unbelievable cool shots with his little PD150 strapped to a hoe as he rode on the back of a trailing motorcycle.

Bogen makes something called an Avenger super grip. You can mount it just about anywhere and the thing is not going to budge. I have seen people use this with cameras gripped to car bumpers and with a fisheye lens, it makes for a really cool shot as well.

Re: Looking for a dolly

check the Hardware section of this site....Danny from DVtec just posted a new rig they are making that attaches to your car and doubles as a small tripod as well.

Re: Looking for a dolly

i would like to remind you to hang a camera or lights on the exterior of a car in a metroplitan area is gonna require a permit, which requires $1,000,000 insurance, and the permit will give a police squad car to run traffic interference for you and make sure neither you nor the public get hurt or damage property. in suburban or rural areas i am sure it is less necassary.
