Doing storyboards now for my August production and I have a specific scene where a noise crescendos, driving the subject almost mad before it goes completely silent. I know I have seen something similar in the past. What I am looking for are some movie recommendations (with similar scene) to draw some ideas from...like going from from to CU to ECU to portray the feeling.... if you have any please reply... appreciate it greatly. Cheers.

First thing that I thought of would to use some kind of vertigo effect. Dolly in and zoom out at the same time, maybe let the zoom "breath" in and out while pushing in. Just a thought, check out some old Hitchcock, he was the master at this.

Y'know, cutting to the character's POV for a moment could help sell it (the character experiencing the sound). If the sound makes you squint, grab your ears, look down, etc, maybe do a POV that's overlit, vibrating, and thrashing with a downward whip?

I'd also think a subtle vibration on the shots of your character that comes on as the audio goes up could help... go handheld as it gets worse to show things getting out of control?

And maybe make the audio REALLY uncomfortable... record some fingernails on a chalkboard, mix it with some dental drill, and fade those elements in together for the peak of the sound? Mix 'em so they're not consciously recognizable, but really get to the listener?

And finally, read up on audio techniques for big sound... EQ and compression (hey, rent a Manley SLAM for the post work!) (It's a $4000-ish compressor...)
