Look of Napoleon dynamite

Hi all. This may be a silly question. I know how superior 35mm is to dv, but has anyone seen this movie?(napoleon dynamite) Do u you think its possible to create images that are equal in the look of Napoleon Dynamite with the dvx?

I dont have a dvx yet..im planning on it with in the next few months. (why is it so hard to get $3k) I know much has to do with framing and lighting and all. but most of the shots in napoleon were outside with mostly sun for lighting.

What are you thoughts on this? If its a dumb question please let me know and I'll shut up.

thanks

Re: Look of Napoleon dynamite

I couldn't stand this movie, so I may not be the best one to judge but, this movie did not look particularly good to me to so yes I would say the DVX would be more than capable of delivering that image.

How could anyone want to emulate this crap??

Re: Look of Napoleon dynamite

You either love it or you hate it, I happen to love it. One of the best comedies of the year for sure. As for the look, I don't think that was so great. The DVX is definitely capable of that. You could probably get something close to it with magic bullet in post.

Re: Look of Napoleon dynamite

For me it was the pacing. There were moments where I really laughed hard, but most of the time I was trying not to slit my wrists...

Re: Look of Napoleon dynamite

yeah.. i could understand how people could not like it. i however love it. its just my sense of humor. i think things are funny that most people dont. i think getting this movie had a lot to do with how and where you grew up. like something that made me laugh for a long time was the beginning when he threw the action figure out the bus window..that was something i used to do. that scene just brought back so many memories from my life..and i think it did the same for the poeple that really liked it.

as for the look, i didnt think it was that great.. nothing special. but i looked at some stills and said the DVX should be able to create footage like that.. so i asked you guys.

thanks

Re: Look of Napoleon dynamite

No worries, but as far as looks go - shoot higher! From what I've seen here, the DVX is capable of creating some truly stunning images (at least on the small screen) - go for it!

Re: Look of Napoleon dynamite

You don't want to cross me??  What are you insane??  Cross me all you want, tell me I'm a bloody idiot.  Hey, we all know what opinions are like, right?  I just didn't enjoy the film, but you know what, you might not enjoy Notorious, that's why there's more than one movie to watch.  The important thing, to my way of thinking at least, is that we both watch as much cinema as we can, even if we don't think we're going to like it, and be open to it.  As far as discussing our different takes on a film, that's what makes this forum so great, we get to do that.  I know a lot of folks who have seen Napoleon Dynamite.  I only know one person (in my real life) that I can discuss it with from a technical perspective - that's why I love this place.

So tell me D.W., what did I miss in the "look" of the film? (I'm not being sarcastic, I'm being serious - since I could hardly stay awake through it, I'm sure I missed quite a bit.)  What about the look of it would you want to emulate?

Best,

Matt

Re: Look of Napoleon dynamite

i honestly didnt even see a 'look' to the film. it looks like bland unsaturated colours to me.

(didnt like it at all either :) )

Re: Look of Napoleon dynamite

Ah, ok. I'm probably a bit older than you as well. Let's see for my time it was Repo Man or Eraserhead, there were a couple of others, but I can't remember the names.

Does anyone even remember Repo Man??

Re: Look of Napoleon dynamite

I think the unique look cam from the costumes, characters and the setting, that alone can trick the eye into thinking that its a unique film look. Other than that I agree with Carlos about unsaturating the colors.

Oh and get yourself an awesome animator, the opening title sequence was one of the best parts of the movie.

Re: Look of Napoleon dynamite

D.W.- i did the same thing...i cant stop watching it.. everytime i do i pick up new and interesting things about it. take note of when kip is on the phone with napoleon. the cheese pile keeps getting bigger everytime they cut back to kip...just a side note.

Re: Look of Napoleon dynamite

this may be another more fit for another thread..but speaking of dvx fit for small screen.. what is the actual resolution of film..lets say i was rendering something for a CG package. what res would i set it to? and what does dvx look like when up res'd to that point?

sure....use and ND filter! ;D ok that wasn't really funny.

Re: Look of Napoleon dynamite

Keep in mind that the total budget for the film was $400,000 or less-- not a lot for shooting and processing 35mm. Not sure if the "look" of the colors was intentional, or just the lack of post production funds.

Re: Look of Napoleon dynamite

i have a question. how the heck do you go about getting someone to give you that much money based on a short film called "pelluca". I dont get it. Like what type of rich person says, "here's 400k or 200k make the movie and ill give you the rest when its done for post work." how can any investor guarantee a return on something like this. especially with a kid fresh out of college, or still in college?

Don't know, but I wish I had invested in the project. Box office gross as of February was something like $45 million.

Re: Look of Napoleon dynamite

does the crew get any of that money or does fox keep it all since they bought the film? and why dentists.
