the latest batches of gh1 are not hackable. we dont know gh2 can be hackable. if those old gh1 bodies remain as the only hackable option, i guess i better start praying my gh13 body lasts for very long time... cuz im not ready to jump on sony wagon. i dont like sony's nex 3 and nex 5 models without wheel button. upcoming Single Lens Transparent (SLT) a33 and a55 will have crippled hd video recording features. sony applies strict product differentiation strategy. theres no active firmware hack community for latest sony dslrs. even if sony's alpha mount based SLT bodies get firmware hack community support, neither canon nor nikon lenses can be used well on sony alpha mount. its flange focal distance sits just between canon eos and nikon f.

i really hope gh2 becomes hackable. no plan to buy it. but just in case my gh13 body dies. my gut feeling is that this gh13 forums will last for very long time. long life to gh13 forums!!!
 
People with hacked GH1.3s who know what they are doing will be in high demand for some time. In just the course of 3 or 4 gigs, I have gone from doing dinky $500 shoots to prove the image quality of the camera, to multi thousand dollar shoots that WANT this camera now.

One lady even said, "thank god, this is so much better than that RED camera we last shot on and paid so much for"


Now of course we all know the red is better, but she had seen only the ugly images right off the cam to an HD monitor and obviously didn't have any of the footage corrected.

I smiled on the inside knowing the secrets.

The GH1 looks gorgeous right off the cam to an HD monitor, so to non tech clients (most of all of who I deal with are non tech) the GH1 looks better off the bat, so to them it IS better.
 
I recently dealt with someone that shot their last stuff on Red as well and they said GH1 looked better. They're a layman but still ...
 
We've discussed this in threads before - the Red footage looks ugly off cam and very digital, it absolutely REQUIRES a pro color corrector. You can't just shoot and hand it off to a client who doesn't know this. It's all the rage right now because people have heard of it and seen some films that have segments where TOP OF THE LINE pro people worked on the color correction, so silly producers who know nothing about anything say, "yeah we are shooing on the RED" proudly thinking that means they are automatically going to get the quality and look of whatever they saw, when that is anything but the truth. I would venture to say that only high budget RED shoots come out right, because you have to have the money to pay the color timer and pro guys who know what they are doing do not come cheap. New film makers and especially wanna be producers have no idea what color timing is half the time so they can't understand why they would have to put so much money into it.

Every red shoot I have been on in NYC so far has either not been completed or looked god awful. These were low to mid budget shoots.

death is like the dark... it doesn't actually exist, it cant be shone and can only be measured by the amount of light, dark just means theres less light... and death just means theres less life!

GH2 - fading hope. if its so good, panny wouldnt have blocked gh1 hacking.

thats more like it! excitement is one of the keys to life.

iam... dare i say... "dying" to get out and shoot but its pouring with rain in scotland... again.

i live near an old fortified island that was used by the romans when they came to scotland and again in WW2, great place to film but on a nice day would be better.

lookout for upload in a few days...

It's sure to come back with the unhackable firmware.

I don't want to create any negativity, but heaven forbid there is a problem, are there any good independent Panasonic service centers that wouldn't upgrade the firmware?

isn't that illegal? They no longer own the camera YOU own it so I don't see how they would legally be authorized to do anything other than what you described. If you have a corvette but you changed out its engine with a dodge viper engine and sent the car in for repair one day to a corvette dealership to fix your tires, and when they gave you the car back they inserted another corvette engine into it, I would think they'd have a huge lawsuit on their hands
 
i've never been one to fill out warranties and such things, i've always had pretty good luck with looking after it and hopefully it will look after you.

but yeah good point what if it does break down and need repaired, id not like sending my GH1 away with hacked firmware, and my limited knowledge makes me liken it to cars these days, its no longer simple machine its a robot that needs hooked up to computers before it can speak and say whats wrong with it.

if i did send my hacked camera back and they sent me a fixed un-hackable one id not be that upset, its still a good camera in my eyes, i'am not an expect tho.

iam sure i read on the hack FAQ about warranties.

good point HOMUNCULUS, but surly they could say the hardware is no longer running on their panasonic operating system so they cant even attempt to fix it?
but yeah i guess it comes down to whats the reason for sending it back.

I was just discussing this. Some people appear to have bad noisy sensors that get a lot more streaking / banding. If you sent your GH1.3 in with a note saying YOU have modded it and do NOT want the firmware touched but would like it cleaned or the sensor replaced, I doubt they would do anything to your firmware.... but as of yet I don't know of any actual case of someone doing this.


Your warranty is void so you would have to pay for the servicing but if you are paying you are telling them what to do and what not to do.
