long cable length

I'll be using a dvx100a for some image-magnification (running the live signal from the camera to a projector in the back of the auditorium) in a few weeks. I was just wondering if anyone knew what long cable runs will do to the signal. Will there be significant degredation in quality? Would the s-video out be any better than composite for this? Is a distribution amplifier needed (or merely beneficial)? Cable length will be at least 100 feet.

Thanks.

Re: long cable length

I have been involved in a couple of setups where we had 4 cameras linked back to a video mixer for a live mix. The cable runs from the cameras were very good quality S-video cables around 30 meters long. That seemed to work fine without any visual loss. Although it was good quality cable it was not RG6 grade cable as is recommended in the link below for a 30 meter run.

Re: long cable length

100 feet is the approximate length of the room. The actual setup is from the camera to a videonics switcher (along with powerpoint and a DVD player), then on to the projector. I talked to a video engineer friend this morning and he said I'd lose about 3dB but it would not be too noticable. He recommended not buying a D/A for it, and to use S-video over composite. He also warned me to watch out that the S-video did not get near A/C lines. Just thought you'd like to know.
